This week we continue with the story of this school In -August 1956, construction of a 10-room addition to the south of the original building was begun at a cost of $350,000, and was completed in August 1957, makinig the Whitby District High School worth $1 million, and considered a model for other school in the province. In April 1957 there were 395 students and 17 teachers, and by the faîl there were new Grade, 9 and Grade 12 classes added. One Hundred more students and three more teachers arrived in the falof 1957, making a total of 20 teachers and 465 students. There was some overcrowding with 40 students per class in Grade 10. Four additional teachers were hired in 1958 to meet the demands of increased- enrolment. In April, 1959 the Whitby District High School Board announced plans to build a second high school on Anderson Street on the same plan as the Henry Street school. While Anderson Collegiate was being built, there was such overcrowding at the Whitby District High School that classes ran in shifts until Anderson opened in the faîl of 1960. At this time, with two high schools in town, the Whitby District High School became known as Henry Street High *School. In the early 1960's Henry Street High School won many championships in wrestling, football and volleyball, a school newspaper called the Purple and Gold was started, and a drama club was formed which put on many high quality *productions. Anderson Collegiate had formerly been mainly a technical school and received mostýof the additions, while Henry had a restricted arts and. science program with a smal] commercial department. The new addition was planned to make Henry a composite school like Anderson, and Mcbaughlin and Eastdale Colle- giates in Oshawa. The addition provided business education and technical departments, shops,' a new gymnasium, lecture theatre, and cafetorium as well as a large library and resource centre. Upon the completion of the addition, the enrolment of the school jumped from 650 to 1,250 students. In January 1972, a parents' advisory council was formed for Henry Street High School to co-ordinate volunteer help. Iu September of the same year, 180 Grade 7 and 8 students attended Henry High as.there was overcrowding at the Whitby Senior Public School and space was available at the high school. This continued until the West Lynde Public School was built. In September 1973, because of cutbacks in educational spending, 14 courses with a low enrolment were dropped, and Latin was phased out after more than 100 years in the high school curriculum. Also in 1973, Henry Street High School became the first in the region to employ the semester systemn. Instead of taking eight credits over 10 months, the students took four credits each in two sets of five months. Periods were expanded to 70 minutes from 35 or 40 minutes, and other advantages included more in-depth study and fewer class changes. Another event of 1973 was the diphtheria scare when ail staff and students had to be innocula Led by the County Health Unit. A factory worker was suspected of having the disease,.and since his brother was in Grade 10 at Henry, the whole school had to be protected. In the 1970's, Henry Street High School has been visited by a number f political figures. Grace McInnis, daughter of CCF founder J.S. Woodsworth lectured at the school, and in 1974, Ontario Liberal Leader Robert Nixon debated issues with the students. .In May 1979, Henry High was visited by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau during the last days of the federal election campaign. Henry Street High School has had an eventful 25-year history, and much of it will be relived by former students and staff June 22 and 23 at the 25th anniversary reunion.
