WHITBY FREE PES, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27s 1979, PAGEil Counci 20 cent The Operations Committee of Council has authorized a recommendation that the rnunicipality pass a by-law raising the parking rate for on streetparkitgmeters from 10 cents *an hour to 20 cents an hour. There was some discussion of increasing the parking meter rates in the town parking lots. This was vetoed by Town Treasurer Forbes "Doc"' MeEwen who pointed out, "6you want to encourage people to do business in the downtown core area of the town. If the parking mneter rates in the parking lots are inereased as wýl1 as increa- sing the parking meter rates for on street parking ... well it is not good business." He said the cost of pureha- sing'Iand for parking lots is keeping pace with the in- creasing cost of property value in the core area of the Town. By increasing the parking meter rates for on street parking by 10 cents an hour it would help to meet the increasing eost 0f provi- ding parking lots but not inerease the burden on the taxpaers. At present the on-street parking rate is 10 cents an hour and it will be increased to 20 cents an hour. The parking rate in the parking lot for the metered parking is 10 cents an hour. ]Reunion ibig .success Cont'd fOM P. 10 enthusiasmn generated." Harry Thompson, the pre- sent principal, told the crow- ded hall: "what inspires me is the genuine excitement and happiness at the sehool the arena and here tonight." He paid tribute to John Bolton, the chairman of the reunion committee "'These nights (of the reunion) have had a deep significance," lie said. "The value 0f an insti- tution is that it can bind generations together for 50 years or more. "Some time in the future, Henry Street High Sehool will go as Coîborne ,did, but the relationship is there." Mr. Tliompson then propo- sed a toast to the sehool, which was enthusiastically responded to by the guests and visitors et the dinner.
