S. 668-3540 I Councillor Joe Drumm brought forth the information that the Whitby Rotary Club can have a Handi-Transit Van ready for operation in October if the Town of Whit by is ready to support the system. The Rotary Club is giving to the town the Handi-Transit Van to provide transportation for the handicapped. The Rotary Club made the request to the Town Council for funds to help support the operation of the Handi-Transit Van. The Council passed the motion in favor of assisting the Rotary Club Handi-Transit Van from October to Decem- ber 31 of this year at a esti- mated cost of $2,500 for the operation of the vehicle._ The Council had a motion placed before it had the mat- ~fer be referred to the Opera- tions Committee and a report be brought back to Council at the July 23 meeting. This motion was lost. Counciuior Gerry Emm said the "information we have is sketchy." He wanted "to know what we are 2etting into." Councillor Barry Evans, pointed out, "these people need the service; although they are not seen. If 'the service is provided they will be coming out of the woodwork." The Council learned that there have been 600 calls a month by those who use the service provided by the Oshawa Handi-Transit. By passing the motion to assist the Whitby Rotary Club in the operation of the Handi-Transit system the estimated cost for next year would be $28,000 with a $14,000 cost to the Town. 660 FRONT ST., FRENCHMANS BAY, PICKERING 1W IN8
