It was pointed out during the, Operations Committee meeting and in the report to Council that the parking meters were purchased in 1969 and the -rate has not been increased since for street parking. The revenue froin street parking. meters is estimated at $13,UW a-t tFe' 1TO cent- an-hour rate for 1979. By raising the rate for street parking to 20 cents an hour the revenue should double and produce suffi-. cient revenue to cover the deficit. With the proposed purch- ase of 89 new parking mie- ters for on street parking meter rates to 20 cents an hour, the Treasurer's, Forbes McEwen, report states. The present penalty for over parking of $2 will be increas'ed to $3 fo;r both on' street parking and parking lot meter violations. The Council at its last regul.ar meeting passed two by-laws increasing' the viola- tion penalty for-over parking o .n both the street andin the parking lot. Counicilor Barry Evans proposed that the rate be increased from -one dollar if palîd right away to $5 for overparking if and when it is paid the next day folio- wing the parking meter vio- lation. He said, he "finds that many of the local people are stuffmng the parking me- ters so to speak. "Merchants are parking their çars in front' or' near their place of business and just leaving thern resulting in the misuse of parking space on the street. "This prevents people from, accommnodating the local business establishments in the business a centre of the Town," he said. He "feels that many busi- ness people would move their cars off the main street if the parking meter violation pe- nalty was set at $5.ý With the business peoples' cars off the main street it would permit people to shop at the local merchants's places of business," he said.
