WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 1979, PAGE 11 Denis O'Connor students are honoredat graduation Thirty-six Grade 13 stu- dents and 44 Grade 12 stu- dents graduated from Denis O'Connor High School June 23. Th school's 10 Ontario Schoars, with an average of 80 per cent or more in Grade 13 were: Bernard Boulanger, Luigi Favit, Erika Rozinka, John Vandenenden, Joseph Cahill, Gerardo Spinosa, Yolanda Van Grootel, John Doleweerd, Ronald Juben- ville and Rick Nieuwendyk. Two Denis O'Copnor stu- dents were honored with awards presented outside the school. The' MacDonald Scholar- ship, available to students going to higher education was earned by Irene Vander- pluym. Bernard Boulanger, who had a 95.5 per cent average, and was the top student in the school, was awarded an admission scholarship by St. Michael's College of the Uni- versity of Toronto. He received the Sir Bertram Windle Scholar- ship, which is awarded only to students who have an average of 95 per cent or better. The Mayor's Medal for outstanding leadership was won by ]Paul Rochon. The Arthur O'Connor Family 'Award for Acade- mic, Athletics, Service and Leadership Achievement at Denis O'Connor was won by Michael Gallagher. An award for outstanding contribution, donated by the Denis O'Connor staff was won by Mary Van Hezewyk. Bernard Boulanger recei- ved the Andrew Foundation Award for highest standing in Grade 13 and Gerry Spino- sa received the award for the second highest standing. Whitby Lions Club Prizes went to Ron Jubenville for scholarship in Grade 13, Bernard Boulanger for Ma- thematics and Science in Grade 13, and Janice Villeneuve for scholarship in Grade 12. The Anca Laboratories Award for Academic Achie- vement went to Jim Vande- nenden. The Whitby Kinsmen prize for Grade 13 was won by Yolanda Van Grootel. The Whitby Rotary Prize for achievement in Grade 13 went to John Doleweerd. The Whitby Kiwanis prize for scholarship in Grade 13 won by Luigi Favit. The Royal Canadian Legion Ladies' Auxiliary Scholarship was won by Erika Rozinka. The David T. Marshall Award for English in Grade 13 went to John Doleweerd and Luigi Favit. The Legion Prize for highes standing in Grade 12 history was won by Janice Villeneuve. The Anne Hendricks Award given to the student making an outstanding contribution to school spirit was won by MaryAnn r Hubers. She also received the Lake Ontario Steel Com- pany prize for highest acade- mic standing in Grade 12, and the Freda Vella Memo- rial Award for English, donated by the Vella family. Margaret Barber won the award for academic achieve- ment in Grade 12, donated by a DOC Parent. Paul Rochon receive the Hendricks Bursary for the greatest contribution in Grade 13. This award was donated by Jim Carson. Winners of the Catholic Women's League partial scholarships for highest standing in Grade 12 were Mary Ann Hubers, Janice Villeveuve, Margaret Bar- ber and Tim Hanley. , Achievement awà rds in French were given to Mary Ann Hubers of Grade 13 and Verda Rochon of Grade 12. Awards for highest stand- ings in Gradeil were won by Thomas Gallagher Bernard Doleweerd, Mary Ann Van- dermeer and Sheryl Verhoe- Yen. D. Professional art critic Michael Burtch judged the entries in the gallery's ninth annual Juried Art Exhibi- tion. The best painting was Variation Number 4, an acrylic by Barbara Claus, and the best sculpture was an untitled work by Dan Reid. Honorable mentions went to Edward Falkenberg for his sculpture entitled Spatial Interlock, Robert Neal for his acrylic paintings, Flag- man, and Nancy Ames Steele for her sculpture of sterling silver and brass called Waiting for Spring. Also winning honorable mentions were Linda Williams for her silver print Dream of Medea, William James Moore for an untitled sprayed wash and white chalk work on paper and Joan Marie Dean for her acrylic painting Different Paths. Mr. Burtch, director of the Lindsay Art Gallery and a member of the Ontario Asso- ciation of Art Galleries said he was "very impressed" with the exhibition. Eighty-five works of art were submitted to the members' exhibition, of which 40 were chosen for exhibit. The members' exhibit will continue at the Station Galle- ry until Sept. 2.
