At 'certain stages in the game, play was containedin the Woodbridge penalty area- with the homè side (Wood- bridge)' revertinïg-to despe- rate clearances, mostly to the.sidelines, but some right up the middle of thefield. >It was the typle of l6ng bail up the middle that caused F the Builders problems. Woodbridge had two very fast inside forwards who were very. quick on picking up these balis and out of only about four chances in the second haîf they picked up goals. Joe Bryant started off the scoring after a scramble in front of the Woodbridge goal, but six minutes later it was Woodbridge ahead by one and there. was no0 further scoring ii, the first haîf. Whitby kicked off in the second haîf and almost immediately tied.the game on a long hard shot by-Martin Algeo, butý three minutes later Whitby were again one goal down. The Builders continued to pass and contain the opposi- tion in their end but could not find the range and with the Woodbridge side just 'get- ting rid of the bail anywhere' His Excellency Robert D.D. However, with 18 minutes left in regulation timne a Robert Longmnuir shot de- flected off a defender and once again the game was tied, this time at 3-3. Again Whitby's joy was cut shoi~t as Tony Bova headed in a free kick. .With only three minutes lef t (of the 90 minutes) Whitby was awarded a free kick when Fred D'Andrea was fouled just outside the penalty area and with the Woodbridge 'defenders trying to get, into position, Rick Wood blasted a long shot into the cor'ner of.« the net. There was no scoring in the two 10-minute overtime periods and the game was to be decided on penalty kicks, (best of fiye). For the penalty kicks it was decided that Greg Bor- chuk would substitute for Ed Svetek (who was a substitute himnself for the regular goal- tender who was unavailable)* and the gamble paid off.
