PAGE 10. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29, 1979, WHITBY FREE PRESS The Whitby Aichives are housed in the Centennial Building on Centre St. Southin a small room, twelve by twelve feet just to the left of the main door as you go in. When the Whitby Historical Society was founded in 1967 the president asked Brian Winter to beome the Town Archivist which he did in 1968. Brian is a clever and sensitive man who with great dedication and feeling has given much thought to this project that has become rather unique I would think. Brian had quite an extensive collection of - documents pertaining fo Whitby of his own. These he donated to the archives including a collection of his fathers; postal material from the Whitby Post.Office dating back to 1830. This was the begining and now the room is bulging at the seams with many treasures from the past. 0e'w-l. About the Archives and Brian Archives, a place where public records or other historical documents are kept in other words a resource centre of paper material, anything recorded on paper including photographs; much like a reference library/ but much more specialized. Documents pertaining to Whitby and to a limited degree Ontario County because Whitby was the County Town are included in this collection. This of course includes Myrtle, Ashburn and Brooklin. Now what are some of these treasures so carefully catalogued and filed away? A Biography file started in 1975 becuase there is such an interest in genealogy. In 1976 there were twenty two engquiries and this year up until August the fifteenth 1979 there have been forty six. This file often begins with an obituary noice and then any other information Brian can find. There are files on all the major Whitby families of the past and they are being added to year by year. People come from far and near for information more often from outside of the community than from within. There is a special file on famous personalities such as May Irwin the Broadway actress of the eighteen eighties. A good deal of material was sent up from New York including her A H~ MI Â1m~ 1979 CHEVROLET CAPRICE CLASSICFOUR-DOOR SEDAN Clearance Sale of 1979 Models OVER 40FULL SIZE CHEVS N STOCK Large Assortment Of Trucks including Vans & Blazers Brian and Ruth holding a recent acquisition belonging to the Archives. autograph and songs she had sung on stage. A very special collection of Canadian school books found in a Whitby barn dating from 1848 to 1900. A framed parchment address read by the Mayor of Whitby in 1860 to the Prince of Wales. This was purchased at an auction in England and given to the Town of Whitby. An important donation given in August 1979, the records and account books of the Sons of England Lodge from 1877 to 1900. A branch of this lodge was founded in Whitby in 1877 and disbanded during the second world war. Most important is a war memorial plaque, hand painted of three meijbers who died. in the first world war. This is extremely valuable historicaly. There are twenty boxes of records of soldiers; files and fact sheets including press clippings. To preserve the Town's heritage there are tax rolls, assessment notices, sheriffs certificates, railroad documents, bank cheques, store bills from 1865 to 1940 and countless other records. More modern records include Legion material to 1930, accounts of a Drumhead service in 1937, a complete file on the Whitby Dunlops and all the press clippings when they won the championship. There are fles too on modern personalities such as John Frost and Desmond Newman, Articles copied from newspa- pers that cover all historical events. Buletens from Service Clubs are included to add to the modern history of Whitby. On loan to the Archives are records of the Township of Whitby from 1850 to 1900 which includes assessment and tax rolls. Also included are miscellaneous papers, 'library, fire and police documents with some industrial files too. There is a large collection of photographs, more than two thousand from 1860 to 1960 housed in twelve voluies but this will have to be enlarged to maybe fiftéeen volumes. Tom Bouckley of Oshawa started Brian doing this. He copies photographs makes prints 8 x 10 and puts them in books according to subject. If anyone has any pictures which Brian could use he will copy them and return the originals. I should think there must be many valuable photos and papers stored away, maybe in attics or basements which would add very much to the present collection and they would be greatly appreciated. There are some out of print books and others would be welcome. Brian welcomes anyone who is interested but please niake an appointment. For 4n interesting and rewarding time do pay a visit to the Archives and you will find that you will return. 1979 CHEVROLET BEAUVILLE SPORTVAN Timbrell to visit WPH Tomorow, the Ontario Minister of Health, Dennis Timbrell will visit the Whitby Psychiatric Institute for their 60th Anniversary celebrations.
