The tistory of karting býeginsin California in 1956 in local- parking where. early enthusiasts used. home-built karts, powered by, chainsaw or lawnmower engines., There are now types of go-karting -practised,,at Family Kartways; karting, for fun and competitive racinâ; Karting.for fun is done. by, famiies, -off -the street, 80 to speak, using karts.,that may 'be rented.î They'ý goý at their own'speed (which is ýneyer .faster than '22-26 mý.p.h. because the karts are'built like that) and simply enjoy the feeling. Competitive racing, .is -practised tbrough many clubs. and is for .,,te more experienced, more interes- ted go-karters. ýThere are three types of competitive karting, al de- termined by the kind ý,of vehicle used. .< The most expensive 'and fastest kind of go-kartinig is the 2 cycle enduro.. This vebicle is drivenlaying down and bas larger, side mounted' engines capable over'travel- ling at over 150 m.p.h... The co mpletekatchsi and. engine (but excluding maintena 'nce) is $2,000 and the w inner. 1of' a- race. is determined bythe greatest number of laps,per hour.. These ka rts' are set up for quick acceleration over a course-,that is only .25 wto 5 mil1e s a nd Îrace îconsis ts of Si te, tenlaps over three beats. The coat of this vehicle is $1,500 excluding mainte- nance. The most popular form of karting, and thié one practi- sed at Whitby's. Faniily. Kartways is the four cycle sprint. The cars are powered by five horsepower four cycle Honda engines and their popularity is due te le price of the vehicle, theystartat, around $500 and cost only about $100 a year to maintamn. These-littie karts are the. ones used by The Whitby Kart Club, a non-profit orga- nization that promotes, runs and organizes races and the sport of karting in general. At present there are 517 or so members of the club, according to race director, Bob Clark, who is a member of the family that owns Family Kartways as well as being general manager of the firm tha t. makes go-karts in Whitby, FKL Manufactu-« ring. There are three division s in the club for racers. First, the Junior Stock for, ages 8-15, but the minimum, weight of kart and- driver must not be less tban 265 lbs. The class is divided into four divisions-numbered A te- D respectively. Drivers start at the bottom (D division). and work their way- up by finishing eitber first second,' or third in a race. Tbey also' move down if they finish last, second for, third last.ý This is also true of the next class, the Senior Stock for' those who are 16' and over and bave, a minimum-kart and driver weigbt of 365 Ibs. The fastest of the four cycle sprint- racing Is the Dual Stock classa.
