Call to order yours 655-4652 MUSCULAR DISTROPHY CARNIVAL A couple of ambitious Brooklin boys, Tim and Christopher Oke 'f Stevens Rd., ran a Muscular Distrophy Carnival on September 1. Thè sale, which was held to raise money for Muscular Distrophy, consisted of hot dogs, popcorn, fudge and lemonade. This is where the centre comes in. Involvement is the key at the Centre. Byk says the members of the centre come up with and organize a lot of their own activities. "It takes eight or ten people just to organize a bingo night, a dance or a bizarre," Byk says. And the seniors do it al themselves. Some programs. are, hQwever, organized by Byk such as the excercise and keep fit program. The program offers the senior the chance to stay in shape through swimming, yoga and basic exercises. "The exercises are modt- fied for the senior," Byk says. While the recreation départment sets policy and writes the rules that the centre must operate by, the seniors organize and plan their own activities with the help of the staff. The centre also has a choir that goes out to entertain seniors in homes for the aged, nursing homes and in other centres in the area. Their job is one of outreach in the community Byk says and this year the choir hopes to travel into the rural areas to perfôrm. The centre does not have a structured curiculum, Byýk says. "We ask the community for support and get it," she says. Despite this, the centre is just getting a good start in its program for seniors and if someone wishes to volunteer their time and skills to help- ing these people they are asked to call Kay Byk at 668-1424. Remember, the major problem of seniors, Byk says is loneliness. We can afford to let them go by the wayside. The next time that you see your grandmother or grand- father, take a few moments to sit and talk and appreciate who and what they are. An eyening in Spain is being ofered to those who hate to see the nights of summer growing cool. Gui- tars play softly while you diie on paella and sip Spanish wine. It's "Costa del Sol" night at the Whitby Arts Station, at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 14th. Featured performers will be The Company of Young People, a semi-professional dance company affiliated with the Dance Workshop, Toronto. Their director and choreographer Fiòna Denzey-Zippan, a noted Toronto dancer will also per- form yvith a dancing partner. Flamenco, regional dances and classical spanish dancing are included ir their repertoire. They will be accompanied by two guita- rists who will also provide background -music during the evening.
