Council's decision flot to have a municipali bus service is a mistake. A mistake that will affect the live of Whitby residents, perhaps for years to corne. The fact is plain'and simple, Whitby will need a bus system more and, more as ti me goes by. The council, particularly councillors Emm, Carson, Drumm ancd Mayor. Gartshore have failed to realize this ahdff~t o~AA?ùIde n îéxcelilent opportunity to gairi experience in rurlning a bus service. If the counicil sets up a system, ten years from now not onlyWIl it be more costly 'but they stili won't know anything;about running a bus service. Their decision has effectively killed pub!ictra nspor- tation fdr the elderly, for shoppers, for workers, especially those at the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital- and the Dr. JO0. Ruddy General Hospital. 1 Mayor Gartshore has said that.a town run bus systern would take people out of Whitby into Oshawa to do their shopping ý May we point out that Charterways' present service does exactly 'that. A Whitby bus system would have the opposite effect ... Whitby. people could go into the downtown to do th eir shopping. The decision has also left many people str'an.ded in the outlying subdivisions. A family without second car would find it dîfficult to get downtown ,without a bus. They could take, a taxi, but at a $1 to 'get in and. 80 cents a mile, this becomyes a more expensive proposi- tion. Senior cilizen s and others on ,a fixed income cno affordi not to have a bus systerv. Another argument, against -a bus system that Gartstiore has favored is that the majority of people using the system woulci not be Wh itby res idents. If the service does not exftend'out of Whitby, this cou Id not' be so. Sure,'there ýwould be people coming into Whitby on GO Transit's service and then taking a town bus to their specific destination, but the reverse is also true when Whitby people go shopping or, visiting in Oshawaor elsewhere., If these people are. coming into. Whitby to.shop or work, counicil shouldý welcome ,them because they* support this communlty.through spending their dollars. If cannot be made any mfore clear, Whitby needs that bus service and it.is only going to cost' more -If we put it off any -!onger. If we could implemfent it now,,Whitby would gain the experience at running such a service when a larger-one is needed and the cost would not be as great..' ADI)RESS LU TTI .RSTO': l'Ill: E.I)ITOR. AI l others can, there- fore,'flot dcaim to be children of God. The Lord's own and greatest prayer, called the high priestiy prayer, is obviously in John 17: 1-26where Jesus prays for himself, his disciples, and tIhe universal church.,Not onydoes Scripture refer to the priesthood of Christ, but also applies it to alîChristains! (1 Peter 2: 5 and 9)., As for a substitute for he Lord's Prayer, the more doctrinal Apostles Creed, hardly palatable to a number of people, mnight be a welcomne change and worth learn- ing by believers; it can be recited inone'minute. At present, 1 can't .think, of any other s uitable replacement. .
