"'In July and August of »J1979", explains Barbara Copp, executive director of the YWCA, "there was a 25 percent increase in the number of women ln the emergencyresldence". Inlher poeitlonwlththe 'Y' for the past nlneyears, Copp says, "six years ago, only one bed was set aside for emergencies, but today, there are always five beds kept for women> and their children for transient and emlergencypurposes." Accommodation la also available at the 'Y' for per- manent female residents who 'Include working women, students and referrals from hospitals' government agencies and social servies. The expanded 37 bed residence bas also demanded an Increase in staff. Minimal fees are charged for the rooms and most meals are included. Nfa person is unable to-pay for emergency'housing, the Social Services Department will cover the -cost of the daily fee. Con- tributions from'the United Way are used for ad- ministrative purposes and subsidize social serrvices including children's progrmmling and some of the emergency houaing.
