Council meeting, roundup....e Gas prices, sidewalks debae Whitby Town Council met on'Monday for a brief but lively council meeting. Mayor Gartshore opened, the meeting with observing 1 minutes ýsilence in honor of the lateMr. Charles Mace, a former councillor,. who passed on earlier this week. It was broughitforw»ard at the meeting that construc- tion of sideWalks fromn Dun- dats St. East to Rossland Road East on Garrard Road will be considerèd in the 1980 budget discussions. Coun. Joe Drumm (east ward) pointed out that there are two schools on the West' side of the road, 'which is heavily travelled, em- phasizing the need for such sidewalks. Coun. Gerry Emnm was pleased' toinform council that lie had taken a tour of new housing developments in the town of Whitby and that the people moving onto the town were keeping up the property beautifully.ý Emm feels that this effort'on the part of the home owners la attracting more people to seitte in our town. Coun. Barry Evans- (cen- tre ward) expressed his con- cern over the possibility of gas price increases in Prime Minister Clark's new budget. Evans pointed out 'that taxi drivers in Oshawa had gone on strike Monday as they' feared the increase in gas prices eould not be çovered, by their present fares. Evans fears that WhitbY taxi drivers may be cOmPelled to take similar action, if such an increase were to come into effect., Evans suggested that if there. is an incrèase in gas prices, council prepare some sort of repot for the taxi drivers to deal with the problem and avoid the possibility of a strike. Drumm brought to the at- tention of council that nothing had been done to clean up the K-Mart'Plaza as was supposed to be done weeks ago. Work will begin immedliately to remedy this situation. In a last minute deputation, council heard from Russ Wilde. Wilde approached-council asking 'them to amend zoning by-law 2585 to allow him'to instaîl a septic tank on his, property instead of the usual sanitary sewer ST.
