In a survey done by the council, resuits showed that 17 per cent -of 292 teenagers surveyed suffered from the blackouts at somne time. The council met with, the students with the purpose of setting up a substance abuse advisory committee whicb received the* unanimnous support of the students ac- cording to secretary Cathy Fertile.. A report that was released in November stated that there is a lack of proper ser- vices *in the région for teenagers with alcobol and drug abuse problçms. In an'effort to combat the problem the couincil has set up a Substance Abuse Com- mittee which is chaired by former Whitby town coun- cillor Tom Edwards. The aim of the comrnittee is to get' the help of teenagers to counsel their fellows who may have abuse problems. They- would then refer themn to agency that can provide needed help. Pinewood Centre Director Brian McLathchie, Alcobolics Anonymous Chairman Jack Clark and Addiction -Research Foun- dation'Director Geof Brown spoke to the group of about 30 students. They told their audience that 13.4 per cent of the ýeenagers questioned said they had feit the effects of alcohol either at school or on the job.' Many said that they had experienced difficulties with Public drunkenness as well as fights and higbWa'y ac- cidents. Discussions will continue with Durbam' high -school principals until February when another meeting is planned with the students at whiclh time the, committee will be appointed. Fertile says that the meeting was beneficial to the students, concludinig that the students discovered that high scbools have differing problemns witb alcohol and drug kabuse. By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff Whitby Regional Coun- cillor Bob Attersley announ- ced last Thursday that he does flot intent'to seek the Liberal Party Association nomination for the February 18 general election in On- tario Riding. Last week there had been speculation that Attersley would seek the nomination along with several others in- cluding former -Wbitby Mayor Des^ Newman; Pickering -Regional -Coun- cillor Doug Dickerson; Ron Sproule of Pickering; Ajax Durham School Board Trustee Bob McCracken as well as former MP and Trudeau cabinet inister Norm Cafik. Cafik was mhinister' of multicultu ralismn in- the last Liberal government and had held the, Ontario Riding seat for il years until defeated by almost 7,000 votes last May 22 by incumbent Tory Scott Fenneli. Attersley said that there. were some dèfinite reasons for him flot to seek the nomination although the re- emergence of Pierre Elliot Trudeau as party leader was not one of them. 'II feel I have, a commit- tment to the people of the town of Whitby,"Attersley said. His reason "bas got to do with the people of Witby who elected ,me a regional councillor." He also feels that the issues he was elected on have« yet to, be -resolved, namely transportation and Brooklin. "I1 feel it's an obligation to deal witb those things," he said. He said he will support the Liberal candidate "in the manner I have in the past. " The party will chose there candidate at a nomination meeting on January 7 at 7:30 *p.m. i the Pickering High School on-- Church Street North in Pickering Villageý.. Attersley is also confident of some Liberal Gains, but he would speculate their ex- tent. , ' . i "'I'ni personnally opposed to. the budget," he said noting that it will be the main bone of contention in the campaign.
