The f irst mustard reference was in the description of God's Kingdom. Jesus said, "What shall we say the Kingdom of God is like? What parable shail we use to explain it? It is like a mustard seed, the srnallest seed in the world. A man takes it and plants it in the ground; af ter a while it grows up and becomes the biggest of all plants. It puts out such large branches that the birds corne and inake their nests in its shade. " From Jesus' teaching came twelve followers. One betrayed him, another denîed him, the rest were so frightened that only one remained at the foot of the cross with Jesus. Yet on the third day, when Jesus was raised to ife again the Kingdom began to grow. The deserters and Peter were forgiven. When the Holy Spirit came to the small group their numbers rapidly increased. From eleven men and a few woman the church becamne over 3,000 strong just seven weeks after Jesus' resurrection. Like a mustard seed the church grew. Now we know that ail church members may not enter the Kingdomn at the end of time. Yet the church is the porch to the Kingdomn of God. The Kingdomn will grow as Jesus illustrated in his parable. Since the first century, Jesus' message and life have at- tracted millions. Since 1885, in Uganda when the church was like the small grain of mustard seed it now includes 5 million members. When Idi Amin was president, a quiet man, Janani Luwum, a Christian, protested the murder of Ugan- das Archbishop Luwumn was shot to death. Out of his mar- tyrdomn the churches of Uganda have continue to swell in numbers. Like a mustard seed! A college training young men for ministry in Uganda is bulging at the seams. The mustard seed, small as it grows. It becomes a tree shouldering birds in its branches. Christ's church has grown, and over the years has encouraged the proclamation of Jesus Christ and His word to ahl people. Our record has not always been the best, but when Christians have been faithful the Kingdom of God has been seen. Last week, on Wednesday, Christians of all denominationS gathered at the Whitby Baptist Church for a day of prayer. Since the early 30's Christians around the world have prayed together, studied the Bible and worked in concert. The Whit- by Ministerial Association has encouraged this ecumenical movement. Again, the mustard seed provides the Rev. Jack Roney i 'G p. .- 'I k: BAILEY IDA PHARMACY 362 Brock St. S. WHITBY 6682100 SHORTS IDA PHARMACY 65 Baldwin St. BROOKLIN 655-3301 illustration. There is, I believe, a connection between mustard and the mustard seed. Mustard in sandwiches or hot dogs does somnething to taste buds. Hopefully the church which grow fromn small beginnings will provide a flavour to life, meeting the spiritual needs of a world that needs to know Jesus Christ.
