The report, "Facts 1980 (September 1980)," states that the replacement value of the board's 91 portables and 107 school and other buildings is $174,821$000. The contents of those buildings and portables has a replacement value of $28,821,000 In addition, those buildings have a gross floor area of 4,273,000 square feet. Some 2,370.3 teachers teach 48,134 students in 1,869 classrooms. The board's secretarial services are provided by 184 people. They also employ 29 maintenance workers and 308 custodians. All of these people are represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees. Twelve schools in the region offered night school courses which are attended by about 5,528 people. There are 75 students in day classes for early school leavers, and 12 in psychiatric rehabilitation. there are also 570 students in heritage language cour- ses, (some languages taught in this course are Punjab, Hindu, Gujarti, Korean and Hungarian.) Forty-two elementary pupils are in special art and music courses. There are 1,862 students in 63 classes taking drivers education and 2,111 credits were earned by students in su er school. It Cthe Durham Board of Eduation $49,217,500 to operate its public schoos. Provincial government grants accounted for 58.3 per cent of this revenue while the taxpayers' portion was 45.84 per cent. The balance was raised from other sour- ces. Public school expen- ditures were also $49,217,500 with 74.45 per cent going for instruction; 8.82 per cent went towards plant operation and 4.6 per cent went towards capital expen- ditures. Transportation services cost $1,476,800 or three per cent of the budget. Secondary schools had revenues of $45,147,030. The provincial government paid 52.71 per cent of this and the taxpayers' contribution was 45.50 per cent or $20,540,440. The balance was also raised from other sources. As in the public school block, secondary schools also met their budget with 77.76 per cent or $35,105,000 going for instruction. The operation of the buildings accounted for 9.32 per cent of the money spent. Debenture payments amounted to 3.43 per cent or $1.547,000 of the budget. Transportation services made up 2.9 per cent or $1,309,330 of the money spent.
