WIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNLSI)AY, FEBRUARY l, 1981, PAGE 4 Development not good enough reason, Aker says . ... Port sewers sent baek for more study By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff Although councillors are confident that it will be ap- proved, Durham Regional Council's finance committee has sent back a proposal to complete the Corbett Creek Pringle Creek Diversion Sewer to the public works committee. At a meeting of the finance committee last Thursday councillors sent the $2.6 million proposal back to works to determine whether or not the project to really needed. If it is needed, then is there any way to reduce the cost? The project will extend the sewer line from Dunlop Drive to the Brock Street South pumping station. When completed, the sewer will eliminate the Brock Street and Harbor Street pumping stations. According the Public Works Commissioner Bill Twelvetrees the extention is needed to satsify Ontario Ministry of the Environment regulations and to allow development in the Port Whitby area. However, finance commit- tee chairman, Councillor John Aker (Oshawa) said, "I no longer see that phrase (Development) as a legitimate reason any more." He pointed out that the region has about 14,0000 em- pty acreas of serviced land ready for development. In making his presen- tation to the committee, Twelvetrees said that the sewer extention was the second phase of an already begun project that will not only the pumping station out of service but the Pringle Creek Water Pollution Con- trol Plant as well. When completed, the project will not only allow for the development of Port Whitby but will treat waste from the Whitby Psychaitric Hosptial which is presently on its own sewer treatment system. Works committee chair- man, Councillor Gerry Emm (Whitby) said that "some of the oldest sewer pipes in the region are in that area" and complained of flooding in many area homes. Emm told the finance committee that if something isn't done the area will be subject to a "bandaid situatio." "Its something that isn't going to go away." If the area is to grow, then the project must go ahead Emm said, adding that there has been "no growth in Port Whitby since the Town of Whitby put a freeze on development in 1973." Twelvetrees said that if the project is dealyed much longer there will be "quite a bit of political action by the residents" and hinted that they could be compelled to do a by the provincial government. Whitby East Ward Coun- cillor Joe Drum installed the 1981 executive. This year represents the association's 25th anniver- sary and activities in celebration of this will be announced at a later date. Anyone interested in serving on the committee organizing the events is asked to call Peter Robertson at 683-4726. In sending back the proposal to the works com- mittee, finance members want to know how many homes are invovled and whether or not the projec tis needed this year. The public works commit- tee was expected to deal with the respect at its meeting yesterday. The results of the meeting were not know at press time. However, Aker told his committee that he is con- fident that the project will be approved. 5 th 5 DAYS OF SPECTACULAR SPECIALS Feb. 11,12,13,14,16 S20%OFF ALL DISPLAYED MERCHANDISE INCLUDING SALE TAGGED ITEMS (excluding cash & carry merchandise) FREE SCARF EACH DAY TO FIRST 25 PURCHASES Ontario Heart Foundation expresses thanks to the town Dear Sir: We wish to thank you for your coverage in the Whitby Free Press regarding our Heart Dance which was held on January 31, 1981.
