Brooklin church finest of local heritage buildinugs Our Historical Heritage By EUGENE HENRY Whitby's foreniost historiaîi a thoroughly acceptable, convention of approach to design,' materials and con- Fortunately, some of the best buildings of our ar- chitecturalI heritage are still in our midst today, sur- vivors of earlier Ontario times. There are more than 100 of these heritage structures scattered throughout the Whitby area. Some are in the Port Whitby community arounrd the harbour and some are clustered closely together in centre town. the best of them are in Brooklin. The Brick mill on Cassel's Road is there, Carnwith House and several struc- tures of the 1850's are near- by, buildings of real ar- chitectural menit and historie importance, for those who live ini the Town of Whitby. It is mnjy view, however, that the white and wooden St. Thomas Anglican Church is Whitby's heritage treasure above ail others. When this superbly proportioned little church was built the Church of England had firm ideas as to church design and the most appropriate materials for use in construction of t hem, throughout the Victorian empire. St. John's Anglican Chur- ch down in Port Whitby was struction, particularly the Kingston Limestone. There are no doubt, others like it in Canada and in other com- mon weath countries around the world. The use of wood to build a Church of God was almost an unheard thing in Vic- torian times. Fine pine was, however, in abundant supply in the Brooklin area and good carpenters were available when the littie church wasbuilt. it was - the architeet (Medley) who saved the day, for wood, ini board and baten construction for St. Thomas' parishoners then, and for generations to corne, down to the present time. His design was simple, and good the littie belfrey made it a thing of long lasting beauty. Fortunately, St. Thomas stands relatively free on an open site today. Given the maintainence that it has received for sometime now perhaps God will spare, his littie Brooklin Church, until the year 2000 and beyond., w~r ~ -. y,. ,,~. ~. ~ ~ ~ ,... - 0 dyCR00 ____COUNTRY ______ ADIO «14 IT'S HEADING YOU R WAY!l CHOO TH1E q RADIO INTIERNAT1IONAL CHILI COOKi Q-t0ee ~OFF The Event 0f 1981 Watch this space- -for further information!- Si.
