At the main branch in Whitby, the overaîl cir- culation figure was 293,397 while the Brooklin branch recorded a circulation of 46,592 giving overal average of 10 items cir- culated for every man, woman and child in the town. In her report Anne Hope- Brown, the chief librarian, noted a "marked increase"l in the use of l6mm and 8mmn projectors and films having included an extra 100 films in the audio visual depar- tment. "Towards the end of the year, thanks to a Wintario grant, we purchased a video tape playback machine and arranged for a long term boan of about 100 tapes on "arious subjects from our Central Ontario Regional Library System," said Hope-Brown. She also noted an increase in art, record and tape boans throughout the past year. The Outreach Program circulated a total of 3,000 books to the Whitby Jail, and 1,2000 books to the residents of Fairview Lodge. Other recipients of the Outreach Program were thé Whitby Psychiatrie Hospital, Sunnycrest Nur- sing Home, the seniors apar~- tment buildings and the Senior Activity Centre. "Our reference and in- terlibrary blan department continued to serve a growing number of persons requiiring books, pamphlets, gover- nment documents and other refernce books for researach and study," said Hope-Brown. The report stated that this department researched 9,672 questions, borrowed 1,436 items from other libraries and sent out 900 books to other libraries in the region. A total of 587 microfilm users were recorded this years, an increase of 200 users over 1979. This increase made it necessary to purchase a new mircofilm reader-printer. Durîng the year 50 visits were made to sehool yards and parks during the sum- mer, entertaining 740 children and circulating 1,550 books. To take advantage of the story hours and other facilities 133 school classes, constituting 3,397 students, visited the library. Ail told 7,531 books were purchased by the main branch during 1980 as well as a 3,558 increase in paper- backs, raising the total number of paperbacks availbe at the main branch to 10,154. The number of records and tapes was upted to 1,424 with the addition of 314 new copies. .The reference department up increased it's total num- ber of government documents from 1,855 to 2,208. "Several surveys carried out during the year (sic) served to point out the fact that book circulation is not a valid measurement of ser- vices and what is important is how well the library ser- ves the people, no matter what they might need," Hope-Brown concluded. B eware of canned mushrooms bearing ý-the brand name Ma Ling K ingswy Jewellers Cans containing whole, âliced, pieces and stems of mushrooms, under the label of Ma Ling, have been taken from the shelves 0f food- stores, ail across Canada af- ter some cans were found to be contamînated from defective seals. The mushrooms come packaged from the Republic of China and are distributed by-Montreal and Vancouver food distribution firms. Officiais from the federal health department said two ilinesses have already been linked to the mushrooms. 0f the five major food- stores in the' Whit- by/Brookbin area, Dominion stores on Brock, Street and the K-Mart Mail said they did carry the brand which has, since the warning last Tuesday, been removed fromn the shelf. Both the Miracle Food- mart and Safeway stores said that Ma Ling mushroomns are not part of the regular stock. Brown 's Foodmaster in Brooklin was unavailable for comment. The health department has advised, shoppers who have purchased this brand of mushrooms to return them to the stores where they were purchased. Sn owmobile tishap sends Brooklin youth to hospital An 18-year-old Brooklin youth is in good condition in Oshawa General Hospital with a fractured left leg af- ter the snowmobile he was driving collided head on with another on the crest of a hilI on Ashburn Road last week. A spokesman for the Durham Regional Police said that Wayne Davis was in a group of snowmobilers hcading north. Davis headed back when one of the group, David Dubecki, 23 of Brooklin was discovered missing.
