WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 198 1, PAGE 11 Fennel su pports Em 's bride stance Ini bis figbt to have the old Brock Street South CNR rebult, Regional Councilor Gerry Emmn has gained sup- port from an unexpected quarter. In a wrîtten statement released last week, Ontario Riding MP Scott Fennel said, "Regional Councillor Gerry Emm bas, I think, done a great job in leading support for the new Brock Street South Bridge and deserves to be congratulated for his dedication and con- cern." During last year's federal election campaign, the Progressive Conservative backbencher also called for the reconstruction of the bridge. Fenneil said that a new bridge will be eventually built and that the present structure was "a vintage? wooden arch over the CN tracks, has separated the Port of Whitby from the town for years and, in the opinion of many, the sooner we get rid of i t the better. " The Tory MP said the fact that "the Port area residen- ts feel eut-off from the main- stream of Whltby is itself a valid enough arugment for a new bridge. Their isolation bas also meant that the port's potential has neyer been realized. "Better access could open up some superb recreational and living possibiities. " In calling the structure "darigerous" and pointing out that accidents easily oc- cur there, he asked, "sbould we court an injury, perbaps even tragedy before we act? " Fennell indicated that should the GO Transit rail service be extended to Oshawa, then the overpass stands a better chance of belng reconstructed because more room on the tracks would be needed to se- comodate the extra rail traf- fije. "Here's hoping that Gerry's Iobbying pays off," he said, adding, "In the meantime P'U be working here in Ottawa to sec if we can't get some quick action on the matter. " Council getting out of decorations Lait week, members of Whitby Town Council decided against continuing in the Christmas decorations business, putting the old seasons trimminga on the market for sale. They hope to get a "4nominal" price for the green and red decorations whicb are now ten years old. Ambulance During the week that en- ded at midnight last Thur- sday, the Whitby Ambulance service responded to 83 catis for service. According to co-owner Bill Cocker, the service respon- dedt to 20 routine catis and to 39 standby catis for other ambulance services in Ajax and Oshawa. The service also respon- dcci to 24 emergency cails including two motor vehicle accidents. The number to caîl for ambulance service is 723- 5232. Council are currently ap- proaching the Downtown Improvement District Association and the Brooldin Merchants Association as possible buyers. The town originally bought the decorations and put up 43 in the downtown area, nine in the Woolco M a il prkinýglotý, ne in Brooklln, il in Myrtle and seven in Ashburn. Town dcvelopment direc- tor Forbes "Doc" McEwen estimateci that it would cost $3,000 to replace the time worn decorations, a cost which is too high. While thcy are looking to get out of Uic business the town would continue to provide storage, hydro con- sumnption and erection costs of the decorations. As of publication time, the Downtown Improvement Area Board had been ap- proached by council about purchasing thc decorations, but no decision haci been made, according to chair- man Michael Burgess.
