WH ITBY FREE PRE SS, WEDNESDAY', MARCil 14, 1I sI, PAG;E 5 Wei says they're looking for jobs@.. .8. Every 17 minutes someone goes west According to Norman Wei, every 17 minutes someone moves out of Ontario to find employment in Western Canada. The Liberal candidate in the upcoming March 19 provincial election made the claim last week while at- tacking the Progressive Conservatives for lack of economic leadership. "Ontario used to be strong," Wei said. "Unfor- tunately, under the poor economic leadership of the Conservative government our province has slipped." To prove his point, Wei asks Durham West residents the following question: "Hlow many of you know of friends or relatives who have gone out west to get jobs in the past five years?" "In fact, every 17 minutes, soinebody moves out of On- tario to find a job out west. And many of them are per- sons under the age of 25." The Ajax environmental engineer went on to attack incumbent PC MPP George Ashe for his expression "the proof is in the pudding." "And he is right," Wei said, "In fact, he is very right every 17 minutes when a young Ontarian leaves this lovely province because he or she can't get a job. The proof is in the pudding." The political newcomer claimed that on Nov.ember 5 last year, Ashe was a mem- ber of the Standing Commit- tee on General Government when a meeting was held to discuss the problems of the province's economic problems with the treasurer of Ontario. Wei said that the committee is made up of members of all three parties Norman Wei Photos wanted for baby contest The Whitby Jaycettes are sponsoring a Spring Baby Photo Contest as a ways and means project for their organization. First place winner will aiso receive a hand-crafted wooden toy gift courtesy of The Wooden Toy Co., in the legislative, all of whom, expect Ashe, were willing to talk about the problems "in good faith." In less than two hours during the November 5th meeting, the Conservative MPP for Durham West in- terrupted the proceedings of that meeting no less than six times with silly heckling and interjections," he said. "He contributed not one single idea at that meeting. At another meeting of the same committee, he in- terrupted the proceedings three times. Some economic leadership," Wei continued. Wei said that anyone seeking proof of his claim should look at the Official Report of the Ontario Legislature. It can be found on pages G-45 to G-111 of Hansard, fourth session, 31st parliament. "Surely the people "of Durham West are not paying their Conservative Queen's Park representative to sit in a committee and heckle other members," Wei said. "Surely the people of Durham West would expect their representative to have some positive contribution to make to a legislative committee."
