i>AG I. S. WLi)N[Si)AY. NIA lUi I i I , 1981 . Wl IITI3Y IRLI; PRESS NDP saddened by Godfrey's defection By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff The official reaction to Dr. Charles Godfrey's endor- sement of the Liberal party candidate from the local New Democratic Party association was rather sub- dued. Last week, Godfrey who was the NDP MPP for Durham West between 1975 and 1977 publicly endorsed Norman Wei, the local Liberal candidate claiming that he was the only man "who can kick Davis' Ashe out of Durham West." Durham West NDP can- didate Hugh Peacock said that the party was "sad- dened" by Godfrey's an- nouncement adding "The more so because he has tur- ned his back on his own achievements as a former NDP MPP in Durham West." "We agree with him that the Davis government has been costly for the people of this area," Peacock said. "We are all fed up with 38 years of the Tory regime." However, the candidate was puzzled by Godfrey's decision to endorse the Liberal party, saying that results of the last provincial election do not show strong support of that party. "The Liberal Party can- didate fell 7,600 votes short of first place, the NDP was less than 600 votes short of winning," Peacock said. "Moreover, the Liberal leader's refusal to discuss vital Ontario issues such as health care, the environ- ment, property tax reform and energy conservation is costing his party support." "We in the NDP are cam- paigning hard on these issues," he added. Peacock said that the par- ty was sorry that Godfrey no longer supported them, however, "we have no time fnr vindictiveness." NDP campaign organizers said that they do not believe that Godfrey's switch will take too many votes away from them saying that their voters "have a strong com- mitment to pÃ"licies rather than personalities." However, in a later inter- view Peacock said that God- frey's decision could give him the opportunity he needs to win the seat. "It will give us the split we need to win this seat," Peacock said pointing to what he described as the "collapse" of Liberal sup- port in 1977. He said that he will also be helped because of "(Liberal leader Stuart) Smith's negative campaign" and because he has "refused to discuss the issues." Marie Brooks, director of Whitby Community Care, recently explained the operation of the centre to the NDP candidate for Durham West Hugh Peacock. The Whitby centre has the aid of 118 volunteers to help 514 clients with garden work, house keeping and other such chores. The Community Care organization opened its Whitby office in 1978 and since that time the number of miles travelled by volunteers has risen 400 per cent. "Just by keeping senior citizens out of homes and nursing homes we are saving the province a lot of money," said Brooks. - Free Press Staff Photo Advance polls tomorrow Pastor: Keith A.
