M [ R II.PIsS Board of Education defeats Remembrance Day motion Students came close to spending Remembrance Day in school this year when a motion to have them commemorate the day in the class was narrowly defeated last week by the Durham Board of Education. The motion, which would have seen the day tacked on- to the March break, was defeated 10-8. Ruth Lafraga, who initiated the motion, said that students would come to better understand the day if they could have special programs in school at the lth hour of the 1ith day of the 11th month. Originally the date signified the signing of the Treaty of Versailles which ended the First World War in 1918. Since the "Great War", it has come to com- memorate the end of the Second World War, the men and women who sacrificed their lives in both wars, and those who died in the Korean War. Lafraga said that very few students went to the special cenotaph ceremonies on that day and so very few under- stand the two minutes of silence. Ross Irwin, 72, said that the Nov. il holiday should not be pushed around for the convenience of the schools. "This motion disturbs me and I cannot support it," he said, "I well remember the day and the news that our men would be coming home in 1918." Linda Carder said she did support the motion. "Many children today have ab- solutely no idea of what war is about." She said they should be in school learning about war and what the two minutes of silence mean.
