WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29,198 1 ,PAGE 9 Between You and Me -'t ,êJJ a Bv RUTH COLES What turris you on, is it music, poetry or maybe the scent of lilacs after a spring raîn? What brings memories flooding back fromn the past? Our senses do, the sense of sight, of smell, taste, touch and of course hearing. We cari relive the past if only for the moment because the senses cari instantaneously trigger a playback. Hearing and listening to music cari create much emotion in many people and too it cari be used in many ways. Martial music is powerful especialiy to people who uine the streets to watch a parade. The bands play on whiie the men march, straight and taîl, sometimes to the tune of their own drum- mer and sometimes to the tune of war. A sight many young ones neyer forget, especially the Garrison Parade of the past, a magnificent group of men, splendid in their uniforms mnoving their feet in unison as they marched along. Music at a time of sadness cari be overwhelming for many and may be wise to be set aside for the time being. Happy music such as the sounds of the big bands wili have oidsters on their feet even though dancing for them is a thing of the past. I have seen 90-year-olds dance to Tommy Doresy and Benny Goodman music, young again and youthfui in ap- pearance as the years slip away. With ail the money in show business I can't understand why there isn't a great revival of big bands as we called them. Lack of money I have been told by people in the business and that I doubt. I think people of ail ages are being deprived of something which is rather wonderful, especially the younger ones. Lovely surroundings and beautiful clothes are synonymous with big bands. The thunderous sounds of an organ in a church or a cathedral, a bride walking down the aisle and memories brought to light of other brides and other times. Tears as people remember the .past, other commitments and other vows. Funerals, the sound of music often Abide with Me and the scent of fiowers often overpowering pull at the heart strings and again we are back in time. The scent of newly cut grass and we are once more running through the grass barefoot. The smeli 0f the oceans, always the same wherever you are. To stand by the sea on either coast and on closing your eyes you are taken back to other countries and other places. Water creates a tremendous pull and for anyone who has lived by the sea there is generaily a great Ionging ta return as it becomes a part of their being. The touch of a child's hand and you are once again taking the hand of your own child. That smail hand reaching up to hold your handis a memory flot ta be forgotten. Sometimes the sight of a baby in a pram, a rosey cheek, a curly head and you are again in memory pushing your own baby aniy to suddenly be back in your own world. Surprisingly odd memories such as one I have of roosters STH E REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY O FDURHAM DRHAMNOTICE 0F DURHAMPUBLIC MEETING frake notice that the Regional Planning Cormlittee wilt con- sider at a meeting to be held on: MAY 5, 1981 AT 10:00 A.M. C9UNCIL CHAMBERS, REGIONAL HEADOUARTERS BUILDING 605 ROSSLAND ROAD EAST, WHITBY Se ses re-live memories crowing on the Island of Ibiza which I arn aiways aware of when 1 hear a rooster crow now many years later. A clear and penetr.-tîng sound which vibrated across the Island quite unlike anything I have heard before or since. So now when I hear a rooster crow I'm suddenly transported across the sea but only for a fraction of a second because what I'm hearing is a Canadian bird whose vocalizing is rather low key. Poetry can invoke memories of the past, it cari make you laugh or cry and in the case of many cari take you back in tirne to a romance long forgotten but at the moment of reading you are remembering a much loved persan or per- sons. We had hours of poetry reading and having poetry read to us in school, a very important part of a young one's education and I think it was good for us but, oh, those poems we were asked to write! My mmnd stood still neyer to get beyond my lines, 'there was a miii built on a hili.' A painful realization that I would neyer, ever write poetry. I must say that of ail the sounds in the world the one which gave me the most joy was my baby's first tiny little chuckle. A timid, surprised sound at first and then acceptance of something out of the ordinary until small peals of laughter evolved, a beautiful sound neyer to be forgotten. Memories are a part of us and part of our environment in which we live and to be handed down from one generation to another. We hope ail children have happy memories to cherish and in turn to hand down too. Many memories which corne to mind neyer seemn to dim and are a part of us, no doubt a very important part because they are a part of what we are. They are part of our total environment which influences us so much and we in turri influence our environment and the people around us to a great extent. Memories cari be cherished, brought out every now and then, held onto if only for a brief time, put back in place and then added to as time goes on. There can neyer be too many and the capacity ta store them is there. % THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF WHITBY PROCLAMATION ......
