WHIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 6,1l981, PAGE 15 Between You and Me By RUTH COLESj uJa Pearis of wisdorn Se many people clip and eut articles, file them away and then at a later date reread them. It often makes interesting readinà some five or ten years later. In most magazines, newspapers and on the podium there are articles of interest or lectures especially when thought of ini the long term. Some of thern contain thought provoking words and pearls ofwisdom. Today I have been going through old clippings, net so old really, 1975 and 1976, but in some ways it seenis to have been a long tume ago. Many topies of that day are no longer valid it seems but others are taking precedence over what is considered to be important now. What is one man's meat la another man's poison. Ideas and thoughts can snowball and be taken up by ahl and sundry until we are inundated with the same subjeet. It is good though te learn about a topie from many angles and from people with different viewpoints. We know that distortions and untruths are commonplace and we have to learn to sort theni out. We have to realize that bias too colours the picture, sornetimes s0 much s0 that we cannot see the truth. Truth is a living thing and as such lives on. Untruths due, maybe hard but in time they do die. One article I'd saved was about new values and did we need them. Have many life styles changed, what is the prosent quality of life? Sheuld changes be made was another thought and many people agreed it would be the best thing. These questions are of 1976 vintage and a few from 1975. At this time at least a hundred underdeveloped nations which contained 70 per cent of the world's four billion population had only 30 per of Uts income. In Canada in 1975, the per capita wealth produced $7,000 and in many of these countries it was $100 or less a year. Can answers be found? It's highly unlikely. No one wants te regress. We give millions of dollars now in aid to the un- derdeveloped world and it is but a drop in the bucket and in seme cases may cause more harm than good. Our way is not their way, we can't enforce our values on them.. Our values may not be as good for them anyway and there is often a great conflict of interest especially when it concerns religion. One schoel of thought says there are answers but it would mean a complete change in thinking. Are we capable of this across the board? Not likely. Before anything mucn can be done we have to "dcean our own bouse." We. might start with waste, millions and millions of dollars a year and the money it costs to dispose of it is mind bending. In 1975 Toronto budgetted $15.5 million to use fer garbage dispesal of two million tons. We live in a throw away seciety and as Henry Ford said many years ago in se many words that we would have it made when this came about. Needless to say ail garbage is not food but a great deal is. We throw out more food than peopie in the underdeveloped countries will ever see. I have seen figures given out by restauranteurs on the amount of food thrown out which was not eaten by their patrons. A well to do friend of ours from England spent some tume in California some twenty years ago and it gave him great pause to think. I say well to do because this man had neyer corne close te being hungry in his life and this gives bis story more meaning. He saw moun- tains of food, often fruit and vegetables tbrown out, put in bis behind supermarkets. More of these foods than he said they would see in England at any given time. There were many other instances of waste and especiaily wbat he saw people leave on their plates in restaurants. We can't say "there by the grace of God go IL" We do it too, exactly the same way but maybe net in the sanie quantity as far as fruit and vegetables go. Se titis experience changed his thinking. What type of mentality allows this to happen? One wonders, a smal thing maybe to many minds but just add the figures across the western world and total it up. A young man told me bie worked at destroying radios fer a company because they had a great excess. I also beard about chairs being thrown out and destroyed because too many had been ordered. Was it easier to do titis than send theni back or give them away? I don't know and I wasn't there. Just a few, very few examples of waste and one would think rather needless. Marketing boards no doubt a great gain for many at much cest and time, now a whole bureaucracy in itself. When we hear of thousands of dozens of eggs, pounds of butter, cbickens and sundry other tbings being "ditcbed" our hearts sbould turn over. In one way this is readily seen in ail the new buildings which house this expansion. This seems to be on a neyer expanding scale. Se now a thought about inflation which at this time is world wide. No government can cure inflation alone, it must be a joint effort not only in our country but everywhere in the world. It. can assist, lead and organize but people too have to care and work at it. Often if a leader tries to lead with his wisdom he is called a dictator and anyone who does not have leadership qualities is called an idiot. If we ever lack leadership we may more likely lack "followship". We must have determination and will to survive if demnocracy is to survive. Spring has sprung The weeds are here!
