PRUII:SSl-D[1)1ION, WlIITBY [FR11 P-.RtESS ITT Cannon started off supplying connectors for the Canadian war effort Cannon Electric Company Ltd. commenced operation in Canada on June 1, 1942 when a charter was granted by the Province of Ontario. The Department of Munition and Supply required a major source of electrical connectors in Canada for wartime's Canadian Industry, and ex- tended an invitation to Can- non Electric to take on that challenge- In a relatively short time, from initially importing electrical connectors and components, Cannon Elec- tric commenced manufac- turing and increased the basic product line until today, 1981, the company is cognizant of over 30 major product lines with world wide connector export coverage. Sales have increased from the modest beginning in 1942 to a level which expresses a growth rate of more than 20 times in 1979. Through corporate strategy and rationalization of product lines, Cannon Electric Canada, a sub- sidiary of Cannon Electric Company, Los Angeles, California, has progressed from the standard firewall electrical connector types to where the latest "state of the art" is employed in the research and development of electrical and electronic connectors, cable harnesses, and interconnect devices for the hostile environment market. The term hostile environ- ment covers the most stringent performance specifications in many fields such as nuclear, sub sea, seismic and space, where climates and conditions exact on man, the ultimate challenge of man's ingenuity. To meet this responsibility Cannon Electric has in- vested in the future of Canada, and it's Canadian facility. Their plant and production capabilities have kept pace over the years and from the small, rented facility in 1942, through a 10,000 square foot building on Danforth Avenue, Toron- to, Ontario, in 1944; a 20,000 square foot plant on 160 Bar- tley Drive in Toronto, On- tario 1954, to today's modern 70,000 square foot, 17 acre, location in Whitby, the com- pany continues to meet the challenge of growth and production capacity required by the various in- dustries we supply. International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation purchased Cannon Electric Company of Los Angeles California in 1963, and in late 1964 Cannon Electric (Canada) Limited became a wholly owned subsidiary of International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, The company has been in- volved with the Lockheed Aircraft Company to supply electrical connectors to Rohr Industri Inc., Chula Vista, Calif., one of Lockheed's team members on the Canadian industrial benefits program. Lockheed-California is the manufacturer of the CP-140 Aurora long range patrol aircraft. Regarded as the world's most advanced maritime patrol and surveillance air- craft, the Aurora's most im- portant missions are to protect Canadian sovereign- ty and assist in NATO defen- ce programs. Under the terms of the 1976 contract when 18 Auroras were ordered by the CAF, the Lockheed organization is required to place close to $1 billion in contracts with Canadian suppliers to the end of 1995. Rollout of the first Aurora came on time and on budget, in January 1979 and the first operation aircraft was han- ded over the Defence Minister Lamontagne in May 1980. ITT Cannon is heavily in- volved in the aircraft in- dustry and is presently looking to becoming in- volved in the field of naval defense and the oil industry. The company has recently developed its own line of connectors to be produced in Whitby for the inter- national market and is an- ticipating further growth.
