Lang is the president of Tije Ltd., the owners of the Whitby Malil which is now in- t) its 11ith year of operation. "The Whitby Malt is Whit- by's largest shopping cen- tre,"- he says adding that the mialt boasts one of the largest Woolco stores in the province. The mail on the corner of Dundas Street and Thickson Road, now features a recen- tly opened office complex, the Lang Tower, which brought- the facility's size up to 285,000 square feet, The shopping complex rests on a 20 acre site and provides almost 1,000 jobs for people livitig in the area. Besides the Woolco store, the Malil is also the home of an expanding Miracle Food Mart and part of the headquarters organization for General Motors of Canada. Lang says that the mailt is adapting to the changing demands of the consumer. "The Whitby Malil con- stantly changes to meet the demands of changing retail trade," he said adding that the trend is to go to small, more specialized stores. "Because of this, we have more and more stores going into the same space," Lang says. "This mail now features a great variety of owner operated stores which care a lot about how the customer is served, " The mal] is almost aiways host to interesting displays and festivities in its maîiîn corridor. These activities range frorn band concerts to service club raffles to art displays. *There is always something interesting for the shopper," Lang says. 'There is always sorncthing going on." The mnail also features manv fine restaurants. The Whitby MaIl Restaurant; Maria's Place, a recently opened Italian restaurant; and McDonalds are among the most visible of these. Lang is presently under- taking a face-iift of the mal that faces Thickson Road. In this $2 million project is an expanded Miracle Food Mart, more stores and office space and a cinema com- plex . The 75,000 square-foot ad- dit ion is expected to be c<)fl- pleted within the next two vears. Another thing that Lang likes t<) stress about bis facilitv is that it. is always open late, until 9:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday and until19 pm. on Sa turday. With the Whitby Mall's more than ample parking space, Lang is confident that the complex gives complete service for one-stop shop- ping to the local consumer. Sklar Furnliture is largest employer Sklar Furniture is one of Whitby's largest employers with 650 people working there. Sklar, a division of Sklar Manufacturing Ltd., was started just after the Second World War by the Sklar family in Oshawa. In the mid-1950's the company moved to its present produc- tion facility on Victoria Street. According to Bob Donald, the company's director of human resources, Sklar designs and manufactures ail of the suites in the upholstery product line. These include such items as chairs, low seats, sofas and stationary chairs. Donald said that in this line, the company reaches gross sales of close to $30 million a year. Sklar designs its products for the domestic market and for the medium to medium- high price range. The 212,000 square foot production facility, ex- ciuding the office, ships the finished furniture pieces from coast-to-coast to many major furniture dealers and department stores. Donald said that the com- pany is being "recognized as Canada's fashion leader" in the furniture sector.
