WHITBY FREE PRESS Nothing's been done about unsafe housing The director of Whitby Community Care said late last week that the Town of Whîtby has known about seniors, handicapped and other persons who have been forced to live in substandard housing and has done nothing about it. Marie Brooks said that the town has the authority to correct this situation. "There are aIl kinds of bylaws which could be used to dlean up some of the dam- Ps but the town hasn't been applying them, " she charged. "But now that our organization has made the conditions public, the pressure is on. " She said that she is per- sonally aware of more than 100 people who are residing in about 15 boarding houses in Whitby which do not meet the required safety standar- ds. " Workers fighting welf are There are some former Firestone Canada workers who have health problems and are fighting to stay off welfare according to Whitby Regional Councillor Tom Edwards adding that they need help. At last week's meeting of Durham Regional Council's social services committee, Edwards said that he has received requests for help from Firestone workers who lost their jobs when the plant closed down last July 18. 'II had someone say, II don't want to collect welfare. Get me a job," Edwards told the commit- tee, adding, "There are several like tha t. " He told the committee that some people had health problems developing when the plant closed down and that they are the people having trouble fînding other jobs. Edwards wanted to know whether or not there was something the committee could do to help. Regional Councillor Laurie Cahill (Pickering), told Edwards that there are jobs available for those people who are willing to work as security guards. Regional social services commissioner Doug Johns said that the committee could ask that the personnel department consider former Firestone employees when filling regional job vacan- cies. However, the committee did not pass a resolution to that effect.
