After the initial success of labt year's cook-off CHOO Radio 14 expect over 100 teams of chili masters Lo at- tend this year's event. Over 5,000 people attended the first CHOO Chili Cook- Off and promoters hope to draw in the neighbourhood of 10,000 to this year's day of fun. "«It's all in aid of Cystic Fibrosis and with contestan- ts coming in from as far south as Texas and as far west as Alberta this is going to he a 'hot' event," said CHOO's program director Joe Frechette. The idea of the CHOO Chili Cookl%-Off was the brain child of CHOO Radios new management which took over in 1977 after the CRTC renewed the station's broad- casting licence. The station currently ser- ves Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and the surrounding areas, priding itself in providing a 24 hour a day country music for its istening audiçnce. The new CHOO Radio 14's station manager is Lorna Braid. Along with the work of Frechette, the leader of the now defunct 1950's group The Beau-Marks, the station is turning its sights to im- proved newscast and broad- cast quality following the current upsurge in country music popularity. Far from jumping on the band wagon, CHOO Radio has been actively involved in country music since 1967. The station has been in- volved in many major fund raising projects, most notably the 36 hour Terry Fox Marathon of Hope staged last September by evening drive home show disc jockey Bill Johnson. Over $30,000 was raised to add to the Durham Region Cancer Society's con- tributions to f ight cancer.
