Defendo is an art which teaches effective counter-at- tack procedures, regardless of a person's strength or the strength, size or weight of the attacker. Underwood, a man who has "always been where the action is", has created and brought the art of Defendo to millions of people around the world, training many law enforcement agencies in- cluding the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Scotland Yard. He was first introduced to self protection when at 12 The british native came to Canada in 1910 when he was 15 years old but returned to Europe at the outbreak of World War I as part of the first Canadian Division to enter the war. Between the two wars Un- derwood did not work any further on his skills of self protection. At the onset of World War Il he was asked to give a demonstration of his technique to Comman- dos. "After 22 years I put 103 guys in the hospital that day," he said. wA-ax, Ontano WHY DO-IT-YOURSELF? LET THE WEED MAN PREPARE YOUR LAWN PROFESSIONALLY LET US RID YOU OF YOUR WEEDS, & SAVE YOU THE TROUBLE. WE ARE NOW SPRAYING. THEWeC Mak CALL THE DANDI-LINE 666-3187 Whitby According to him, the basies behind Defendo is the use of pressure points and nerve endings throughout the body. Any one from nine to 90 can become proficient in Defendo, regardless of their physical stature or agility on their feet. "A nine year old 80 lb. boy, or a slight, attractive young girl can quickly learn how to dispose of a 200 lb. attacker in a matter of seconds." In his 73 years practicing Defendo, Underwood has met and befriended many legends, both living and dead, becoming in his own right a legend onto himself. Charlie Chaplin, Buffalo Bill Cody, Lord Thompson of Fleet, Rocky Marciano and Muhamid Ali are but a few who have met and come to respect his inner strength. "Ali won't even come near me any more because he is afraid of me," he said. Part of this inner strength comes to him through God, he said. "A lot of people ask me how they can be like me when they are my age," said Underwood, a born again Christian, "I get a lot of help from upstairs." As recently as last year he executed a swan dive from a 75 foot high tower, at the age of 85. Underwood's personal motto is one which he admit- ted took a while to express. It reads; "Let no man doubt my good will or respect for law and order lest he also mistake my ability to defend myself in unprovoked en- counter." "That's my way of saying I am a nice guy but watch out," he said smiling. He has made numerous television appearances and is currently preparing to ap- pear on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson for his third time. The last two times he ap- peared, he taught WKRP in Cinncinati's Loni Anderson about self protection and Lou Ferrigno, The In- credible Hulk, who the in- credible one really was. A movie is currently in the works about his life which will star a big name actor who has presently not been decided upon. "I would like to see Mickey Rooney play the part because we are much the same and he's a born again Christian too." The defendo course, which will be in Oshawa at month's end, recently helped some senior citizens to thwart a robbery attempt, disarm the assailants of their guns and turn thiem over to the police. "There are 16 ways to stop a direct punch but we will only teach you two in the classes because after the first attempted punch he would be on the ground un- conscious," said Under- wood. "You're not going to tell him to get back up, you have 15 more ways you could show him." "You can stop them with Defendo, because, if you don't stop them in the first two seconds, you are not going to stop them." The course consists of five, three-hour sessions and a final five-hour session Saturday at the end of which time Underwood guarantees the student will be able to defend themselves in any at- tack situation.
