P)I 9 .Wl IITIï3Y FREL PRESS Whtby student tops at science f air Whitby's own answer to Albert Einstein, the father of the theory of relativity, Wayne Conrad, walked away with three top honors at this year's annual Durhamn Regional Science Fair. Conrad, a grade 13 student at Anderson Collegiate and Vocational Institute, and his science fair project entitled "The effects of small air ions on huma n psychology and physiology and on microbial growth and development" won the Durham College Faculty Association award for the best experimental procedures, the first place award for senior biology and the grand prize for the best project of' the 184 entries. The Brooklin youth will represent the Durham Region at the Canada-Wide Science Fair for the third time this year. In 1978, Conrad teamed-up with Lloyd Hutchinson and won the environmental design award for their solar powered vehicle, "the car of the future."- Conrad's project, "acid ramn-causes, effects and an electrostatic solution", won the bronze medal for physics, the Electrostatic Society of America award and the ShelI Canada Award for the best project overal in 1980. This year's winning project deals with electricity in the air and how it affects people and microbes. When he is not involved with compiling and resear- ching new science fair projeets, Conrad is involved with the school debating team, yearbook production and the chess club. He is also a member sargent in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets 151 Chadburn Squadron, where he is a recruit and flying in- structor. Conrad acts as the foun- ding chairman of the National Student Science Council, a non-profit organization which provides science students with resource materials. The Anderson student hopes to go on to University this year to study pre-med and electrical engineering. It is his wish to eventually become a doctor of medicine, specializing in some branch of neurology.
