A rear soft fascia body-coloured bumper is on all models except station wagons which have a chrome bumper and vertical rectangular taillamps. The aerodynamic wedge-shape appearance of the J2000 has a drag coefficient of approximately .392 on hatchback models, .407 on coupes, .432 on sedans and .428 on station wagons. Standard silver argent rally wheels with black centres and a red Pontiac V- crest have P175/80R13 glass- belted radial tires. A bright chrome trim ring is optional. Also available on J2000 models are all-new cast aluminum wheels with an integral convex-shaped aerodynamic aluminum cover. Optional steel-belted radial tires are available with either wheel. Inside, all J2000 models have reclining front bucket seats with several increment of adjustment as standard equipment, offering additional comfort to driver and passenger. Hatchback and station wagon models have standard full folding rear seats to make cargo loading easier. With an average interior volume index of 100.1 cubic feet (based on coupe, sedan and hatchback models), Pontiac's J2000 is classified as a compact class car. Simulated wood instrument panels and matching consoles with a floor mounted shift are standard on all J2000 models. Located on the steering column is a multi-functional lever which includes windshield wipers and washers and headlight dimmer switch. Base J2000 models feature Derma vinyl or Millport cloth seats. An upper level luxurious trim in Prima cloth is standard on J2000 LE models and the PMD bucket seat with open head rest, designed in the tradition of Pontiac's Viscount seat, is standard on SE hatchback model in Bazaar cloth or Doeskin vinyl. The PMD seat, which offers additional lateral support, also will be available as an option on base J2000 hatchback models. Standard equipment on all J2000 models includes power front disc brakes, a locking gas cap, a new Delco 2000 series AM radio (with digital clock in a minimum package size, a fixed mast whip antenna and a remote hatch/tailgate/trunk re- !case. A fluidic windshield washer system, designed with a single oscillating jet- stream that covers almost the entire windshield for efficient cleaning action, also is a standard feature on all J2000 models. Optional Delco 2000 radios include AM-FM monaural with digital clock, and stereo models, all with digital dlock and choice of an eight-track or cassette tape player. Monaural systems include two speakers mounted in the instrument panel while stereo systems feature four speakers (two front, two rear) that have controls for both front to rear and left to right balance. Other major options include air conditioning, power windows, power seats, power door locks with touch control switches and puncture-sealing tires. Standard engine for all J2000 models is the transverse-mounted GM 1.8- litre (112 c.i.d.) L-4 Two- barrel. This engine has been designed to provide optimum fuel economy without sacrificing performance. Rated at 47.2 horsepower per litre, this engine has one of the highest horsepower-per-litre ratings of any GM engine. The compact fast-burn combustion chamber has a centrally located spark plug with high turbulence and is designed for a 9 to 1 compression ratio. The standard four-speed manual transmission offers quick acceleration with a 3.53:1 first g?ar ratio and features an overdrive fourth gear ratio of 0.81:1. Optional three-speed automatic transmission has a torque converter clutch to help improve fuel economy. Front suspension uses a MacPherson strut with a strut-mounted spring, stabilizer bar, stamped lower control arm assembly and cast steering knuckle. The design of the suspension allows replacement of the absorber portion cartridge only. mounted rack-and front for shock of High- pinion steering provides a curb-to- curb turning diameter of 34.5 feet. Design of the rear suspension was coordinated by Pontiac engineers with ride, handling and space efficiency in mind. A double- crank trailing-twist axle, which also acts as a stabilizer bar, has a trailing arm on each side, interconnected to the beam in a rigid manner. A conical, variable-rate coil spring design helps maintain a constant ride balance between front and rear suspension at all passenger and cargo loading levels. Major corrosion protection features on the J2000 include zincrometal coatings on all steel hoods, fenders and door outer panels, and full length, constant height, automatic spray application of lower body anti-chip plastisol. Body sections have been planned so doors, hoods and trunk panels have fewer complex mating requirements for bëtter quality. Doors are stamped as one-piece inner and outer panels for more precise door shape control. Body sides for four-doors are one-piece stampings while body sides for two-door models are fabricated on a single fixture to achieve equivalent precision.
