Br~k1in Byinels Hi THERE: Before I go any further, I would like to wish Mike Burgess and the staff of the Free Press a happy ten- th birthday on behaif of ail their "northern" readers. THANK YOU I would like to thank ail the people i Brooklin who sponsored me for the W.IS.C. swîmathon. I was able to contribute $134 to my swim club. The 71 members raised over $4,000 this year. A personal post script: Peter and Mike Pheiffer of Brooklifl have been members of the Whitby iroquois Swim Club for many years now and have been quite successful i bringig home the medals. Peter, at age twelve won the gold medal in the 1500 meter freestyle at the Guelph Championships recently. W .I.S.C. won the team championship wxth over 100 points. Both Pheiffer boys have a lot to be proud of. I'm sure that W.I.S.C. would be pleased to see a lot more members from the Brooklin Ashburn area compete. MEADOWCREST PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWS On the last day of school, the students of Meadowcrest held a surprise assembly, to say a fond farewell to William Batten, their principal of eight years. Each class presented. Mr. Batten with a momento. Some gifts were songs, poms and pic- tures, ail made by the students thernselves. The junior grades made Up a scrap book which inluded photos taken of Mr. Batten doing varlous activities around the sehool. There was also a huge cut-out painting of him which was as tail as himself. The assembly ended with everyone joining in for a rousing chorus of "For he's a joily good feilow. " The staff had a luneheon for Mr. Batten, at which former teachers and support staff were in atten- dance. As weil as the gift of binoculars, he received a scrapbook of pictures under which were in- teresting captions, many of which were favourite sayings or word expressions that Mr. Batten frequently used. So we say good-bye and wish hunm weil in his new duties next fail. BROOKLIN SKATER HITS GOLD Congratulations to Debbie Cann of Brooklin, who was presented with her gold free skating medal in Oshawa on June 30. BROOKLIN BUSINESS ASSOCIAT1ION NEWS The Brooklin Business Associat.ion held their monthly meeting on June 24 with M0 people in at- tendance. The guest speaker was Robert Short, director of planning for thie Town of Whltby. Mr. Short spoke on the proposed expansion of Brooklin and the fact that a planning study was to be done by bis department witb reference to the 1beautification of the downtown core, parking facilities, and ingrowth in the business sector. A lively question and answer period ensued, and a number of problems were cleared Up. The next meeting of the Association will be held Wednesday, July 22 at the concept centre at noon. We invite any self-employed business person in Brooklin, Asbburn and surrounding area to join. Have a say i the growth of your commumity. Any citizen i Brooklin who bas any problems and/or questions they would like the Business Association to deal with, please contact me by phone, mail or in person. ASHBURN FAREWELL Thoee of you who bave ever driven tiirough Ash- burn are well aware of the Ashburn General Store and Post Office. This enterprising venture has been operated for the past 34 years by Helen and Russ Batten who have recently sold the business. Although Helen and Russ have earned their retirement, we wiil nonetheless miss them. On Friday, July 3, they moved to their new abode in Oshawa. A reception was held Sunday,.June 28 in the Asbburn Community Centre for the couple and the community as a whole presented them with a beautiful stereo system. The church, wbich was built with a great deal of assistance from Mr. Bat- ten 13 years ago after a previous fire destroyed it, presented them with a set of patio chairs. You'll ho sadly missed in the community ýHelen and Russ. Good luck in your new home, and don't forget to corne back for many visits. TIP 0F THIE WEEK Summer means camping and out-door cooking. Whether you cook over an open fire or a coleman stove, rub a thin coating of liquid detergent on the outside of your pot before you put it on the flame.
