THE CARE AND FEEDING 0F A COLUMNIST The contradictions and ambiguities that are evident among the above quotations, may provide you, the gentle reader, with a mere inkling of the dilemnia, the paradox and the utter confusion a writer encounters when he tries to guess how and wbat to write to survive in print, let alone in funds! The same applies to any creative workers such as: artists, thinkers, inventors and the like. The truely sincere and dedicated ones (a dying breed) know exactly how and what they want to write and will determinediy stick to their (better?) judgment regardless of the consequences (which often means recognition after death by starvation or worse). Now anyone who bas taken any course in art history at any of the braifl milîs knows that the greatest civilizations throughout the history of man are being evaluated by their creative thinkers, writers, artists and inventors, more than by their military leaders and war-lords. So why has it been open season on ail these creative workers for the last 6,000 years or so?!1 So who are the people whom society most often wants to pile riches, prestige and power upon? Too often they are the pinlps, the gangsters, the corrupt politicians, unethical businessmen, swindlers and other such social parasites. I would estimnate that for every creative worker that is permitted to contribute more than a tenth of A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE Just Might Change Your Life Explore your potential as a Real Estate Sales Associate, attend a Family Trust Corporation CAREER, IN REAL ESTATE SEMINAR THU RSDAY, AUGUST 6 AT 7:30 P.M. With the possible exception of Japan today, conservation of valuable. national resources is not focused on human ability, only on macbinery and general hard- ware. It is not only society in general but also indivi- duals (and even individuals who are themselves creative) that have a subconscious killer instinct against writers andartists. They always want to waste their precious time and resources by asking them to do things that aren't even valued, or treat a writer as if he were a one-man charitable organiza- tion with nô need to survive. And very few can tolerate an artist who wants as much for bis pain- ting as the average urbanite is willing to spend for the frame that it would go into. Too often artists do a work with loving care, give it away free, and then discover that the recipient values it exactly as much as what he paid for it. So it seems that anyone who dreams that he has any above average potential, and is driven by an ambition to develop it for the common good, will most probably have to pay the price and be punished by society for his good intentions. "Will it seIl" is the question that bas to be answered mighty fast or death to the talented. Tbe almighty dollar is the only true God. Even creative inventors who in- vent ideas that make big money are often punished for being creative. Charles Goodyear, the inventor of Vulcanization (a billion dollar process without whicb the world rubber industries couldn't exist) died in poverty! W.A. Mozart (whose music makes milions for many mercenaries today) also died poor and was buried in an unmarked grave. Socrates, one of history's greatest tbinkers, was ordered to poison himself with hemlock. Vincent Van Gogh (whose paintings fetcb about a million dollars a piece today) could neyer get one penny for any of his work for as long as he lived. Moussorgsky ac- claimed today as possibly the greatest of tbe Russian composers died of a broken heart. In this space age, electronie age and age of economic crisis, stifling, and discouraging creativi ty still seems to be a widely popular sport. Some say that the secret of success is to be mediocre. An uncommonly honest and successful writer, Grace Metaliou (author of Peyton Place), said, "I'm a lousy writer; a helluva lot of people have lousy taste". (I just hope that I'11 be that honest if the chance ever presents itself!) In tbe meantime, my faithful readers (both of you) thank you for taking the trouble to seek out my columnn which you find buried in the back pages on odd- numbered Wednesdays, I commend you on your taste. However, since you of good taste are in the minority, I may forever regard my writing as just a pleasant hobby. Actually I do love being a writer, it's just the damned paperwork that I can't stand! :WHITBY FIREE PIRESS 10lth Anniversary~ IWIN 2 FREE TICKETS TO SEE hSTYXI *1981, to qualify.
