Earlier this year, Premier Bill Davis announced that the province would build a CAD-CAM and robo- tics centre not only for research and develop- ment but for skill train- ing as well. Since that time, a host of municipalities from across Ontario, in- cluding Durham, have man. In a formal brief to Grossman, Herrema said that locating the CAD-CAM project in this area would -have many economic bene- fits. Herrema said that the centre would give the region a grester ability to attract new industry as well as maintain and expand existing in- dustries. It was stressed by the chairman that he 18 not seeking to have the plant located in any specifie mumicipality in Durham - just to have the facility in Durham. "Durham is our priority, " he said. The region's position is being backed up by the Durham College of Applied Arts and Technology and its president, Mel Garland. In supporting the region's brief, Garland told Grossman that the college is already active in the roboties field and is presently providing some training programs in co-operation with eight local industries.
