Salés Sric 666111 et.1 se 68-58 By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff Taxi fares in the Town of Whitby have been in- creased by ap- proximately 13 per cent. Whitby Town Council approved the new fare structure requested by Circle Taxi and Bell and Bowman Taxi at its meeting Monday night. Not only will the fares increase but the meters used to determine fares will be converted to the metric system. The current fare structure charged is $1.20 for the first one- ninth of a mile and 10 cents for each addition- ai one-ninth of a mile. The new fare struc- ture wilI be $1.20 for the f irs one-seventh of a kilometre and 10 cents for each additional one-seventh of a kilo- metre travelled. The last increase in taxi fares was in January, 1980 when council approved a 15 per cent hike. However, what coun- cil approved what not exactiy what was asked for by Circle Taxi. In a letter to council, the owner of Circle Taxi, James Caskey requested that the new fare structure by $1.20 Red & White sliced Mapte Leaf bologna, chicken, dutch, pepper,ý plckle& pimento, mac & cheese, luncheon or pizza MMwhilte bread lunc h meats Pop People Pop CASE 0F 12-30 oz BOTTLES $4.99 & dep. Councîl only approved 70 cents per kilometre. Don McKay, town clerk, told council in his report that Circle Taxi's request would mean an average fare increase of about 20 per cent. "Having reviewed the proposai of Circle Taxi Limited and the appro- priate matters related thereto, town staff is of the opinion that the proposed fare increase of Circle Taxi Limited is excessive," McKay said. "Town staff, however, recognized that operating costs bave in- creased over the past year and a haîf," he con- tinued. "'It is, therefore, recommended that council consider a some- what lesser increase in the taxi fare structure.", Circle Taxi had also requested that the meter increment be changed from its present 10 cents to 20 cents. Bell and Bow- mnan did not support this request. Coundil rejected it on the grounds that existing metres could be converted to metric measurement by changing the gearing of the device and the majority of Ontario municipalities use the base incremnent of 10 cents. McKay told council that the new fare struc- ture would be im- plemented sometime, in the next three weeks as soon as the meters were converted to the metric system.
