Adoptive Between You and Me What a delight this week to hear of future plans for Port Whitby. For a town to have such a bonus as a natural harbour is a great asset both culturally and economically. Whitby by the Lake - why not? We are close to Toronto, one of the most popular cities in North Arnerica. Tourists are coming from ail over and especially the United States to enjoy the city and al it affords. Thirty miles or so is nothing in the scheme of things and when people are on vacation a side tour is rnost pleasurable. Niagara on the Lake has dont it, why can't we? Stratford too has becorne a popular place to be, with people from ail over flocking there during the season. Whitby over the years has needed industry badiy to heip us with ýour tax rate. Good things are hap- pening in this area too and we hope for more to corne. I would like to see the Volkswagon Company locate here but it may be highly unlikeiy. Many of us might like Whitby to be a sleepy, quiet littie town forever but is this possible? Not today as we are too close to a huge metropolitan city which is growing by leaps and bounds and today is almost on oui- doorstep. This means we will grow too but in what direc- tion? We must have a good tax base as this is one of the most important parts of running a town or city. Tourists are a great source of revenue and especlally if they corne for a purpose such as theatre or sports. This of course changes the face of the town but what are the alternatives in the mean- tirne? I feel a research centre would be ideal and I have written about this before. University towns are great and bring prosperity in rnany ways. Apart from pure economics, money being spent in stores and so on there are other advantages. Students needing accommodation and renting "digs" or rooms from often old timers who are alone *in spacious homes. However, as much as we might like a "college town" it is highly improbable at this time or maybe ever. I hear of people going to various towns in the province for various-reasons including myseif and my friends but flot Whitby and why not? I must say there are people who do corne to shop at one store but is one store enough? Shops are often great grabbers but there have to be a few which we now have and in time will draw people. Word of rnouth travels fast but first the 4"4news" has to get around. It is a beginning but it takes time. Good public relations are everything and can make or break without exception. This ail costs money but the pay off may be well worth it. The Whitby harbour and port area may be the beginning. Boating is the in thing today, especially sailing. As time goes on and inflation reaches an al tirne high it will becorne more popular and rnuch' cheaper than other forms of vacationing. Toronto has only so rnuch room for marinas so the only answer will be to locate outside of the city. In days gone by the Royal Canadian Yacht Club was the place to be and many of us spent many a happy hour there. A club, a place to be, to dance and par- parents are also wel- corne.
