The request bas been made following a fatal accident that occured at the intersection last week. Police said that the impact knocked both vehicles into the ditch. Dead are Nicholas Baranyi, 56, of Willow- dale and Virginia Thistie, 56, of Toronto. The driver of the car carrying Thistie, Albert Boxinbauzn, 56, of Hamilton was treated for minor injuries at the Oshawa General Hospital and released. As of press time, no charges had been lain in the incident. In making the motion before regional council, Regional Councillor Gerry Emm (Whitby), chairman of the public works committee, «said that only temporary traffic signais could be installed because the in- tersection is due for reconstruction some- timnein 1983. Emm toId council that any lights that were in- stalled now would have to be taken down during construction. A spokesmnan for the transport ministry said that the intersection is due to receive traffic lights within the next five years and although the accident has prom- pted the ministry to exa- mine additional con- trois, temporary traffic lights are not among the options being con- sidered. While the intersection has long been con- sidered dangerous, ac- cording to MTC, the last fatal accident there prior to this one occured in 1977. - According to the ministry spokesmnan, the intersection' will have four left turn lanes built during reconstruc- tion within the next five years. The event that was held on May 30 at the Iroquois Park was organized around a Texas style chili cooking competition that saw some fifty teams entered. Teams came from throughout Durham Region and southern Ontario as well as from as far away as Texas and Alberta. Plans are currently being made for a third annual event that will be held at Iroquois Park on May 22, 1982.
