Council Column forgotteiî, the flooding caused councîl to undertake measures to protect the homes and businesses mostly in the downtown core. This can be-seen by a drive along Ash Street today. No longer is the creek there but through the Neighbourhood Improvement Program we have drained lands making it available for parkland and housing. Most of the downtown Public more aw are about planning By REGIONAL COUNCILLOR GERRY EMM Chairman of Reglonal Public Works Last week the mayor announced the chairmen of the town 's various departments for the upcoming year and this means PUi be changing from chairman of planning and the chairman of the administrative committee back to a department. I'm always glad to chair, that being the fire department. Looking back over the past year during the time I was planning chairman my aims were to increase public awareness of the planning process and to dissipate some of the concerns relating to planning the publiccan have-from time to time. My commit- tee busied itself with countless meetings involving many areas in the town. I would like to thank my committee and council for giving me the responsibiity to use my exper- ience towards common sense planning. The possibilities for good planning in Whitby can only work with determination and not with the assumption it will just happen. It can be very challenging and rewarding and gives you the added confidence in yourself that you have the ability to plan for the future and for other people, and that they trust you to do it right. I think this is very im- portant in the planning process. During the Labor Day weekend most of Durham Region was experiencing heavy rains causing wide- spread flooding in many areas. As I reported in council two weeks ago, we in Whitby escaped with littie or no problems such as we had in 1971 with sewer back-ups. For some of us who might have Gerry Emm streets now being reconstructed drain also into the underground Ash Street culvert. It is now my hope we will be able to do the same work in the Port Whitby area now that we have a plan to work with to solve the drainage problemns which have plagued the Port for so long. Remember that October 13 to 16 is "Fail Clean-Up Week" in Whitby and this includes aIl areas of the town. Next week is Fire Prevention Week and I would urge all residents of the town to attend the open house being held at the main fire hall on Brock Street South throughout the week. In closing, I wish to thank the people who came out last week to the planning open house to be part of the planning process. Please caîl me anytime at either 668-5803 or 655-480.
