WWTBY FREE, PRE$SS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30. I 9$ 1, PAGE 1.9 Breakfast Last week we asked readers of this column where they would prefer to dine, and promptly answered the question by suggesting they look for quality, good price and pleasant atmno- sphere. In this context of dining we were thinking of the more ela- borate type of dining spot where you expect carpets, tablecloths, restaurants offer good fo od beautiful decor, candles and soft music. However, there are other dining places that cater to an entirely dif- ferent clientele, and that group is made Up of working class, business and professional types. We are referring to the small restaurants that do a brisk breakfast trade and quick lunches. Last week we had the chance to visit one of these small restaurants in the town of Whitby for breakfast. It was reasonable and en- joyable. The customers at tables are supplied with a paper placemnat and no other frilîs. The ser- vice is quick and the food is both plentiful and good. Also we could add that the price is right. In one of the restaurants we were served two eggs, several strips of bacon, home-fries, toast and coffee. It was a meal and it cost only $1.95. We had noticed several of these small restaurants in Whitby, Oshawa and Ajax and often wondered how they survived. We think the answer is in quick service, quality food and at a good price. You don't get frilîs and decor, but on the other hand you don't pay for them either. We feel it is only fair they be mentioned in this column, and after eating at some of them during the past week we can vouch for them, at least the ones we visited as being clean and good places to eat.
