Sepa ate bo a d deWITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7i1981-PAGE 7 Seprat barddiector says DO'C's overcrowded Grade 9 and 10 studen- ts at Whtby's Denis O'Connor HIgh School face serious ovcrcrowd- Iig problenis, according to thc director of educa- tion of Uie Durham Reglon Roman CaUiolic Separate School Board. Dr. Earl Lagroix said - -THE DAY CARE CENTRE To clear up any misunderstandings, I have donc a bit of research. First of ail the suggestion made for the old library was just that. When that suggestion was made to the YMCA, along with the proposai, they were also told what had to be done. Another misunderstanding was how this service was going to be paid for. WelI, you can breathe easy again because our tax money will be spared this time. This is a YMCA project, therefore, they will be paying for it. Anyone using this day care service will be paying for it and those who aren't going to use it won't be paying anyth.ng. I contacted Mr. Frazer Stewart of the YMCA to niake sure my facts were straiglit. His response follows. A recent feasibility study conducted by the Durhamn Region Famnily YMCA this past summer, on Day Care services in the Port Perry area, bas been received by the Board of Directors of the Y at their regular monthly meeting. To this end, the Board has reviewed the recommendations of the study and has approved the go ahead to initiate the appropriate follow-up actions suggested by the report in order to establish a Day Care service. In doing so, the Board sees further preparation required on selecting a suitable location, developing the program design and determining the financial viability of such a service. As a non-profi t, charitable organization, the Durham Region Family YMCA is dedicated to pro- viding a service that not only meets the needs of the communîty but, also in such a manner that it will be cost effective. Any proposed start-up of such a ser- vice Will be determined by the Board, following the identification of the forementioned criteria. I hope this clears Up any misunderstandings. SALES - REPAIRS TO ALL MAKES BLAIR PARK PLAZA 100 LUPIN DRIVE, WHITBY 668-6060 AUTHORIZED Qua"sar DEALER last week Uiat the~ board and Denis O'Connor's private board, which la responsible for grades il, 12 and 13, bave sent out a questionnaire to determine whethcr or not another separate high sehool is necded i Uic Whitby-Ajax- Pickering area. Presently there are only two CaUiolic high schools ini Uic separate board's jurladction - one bcing Denis O'Con- nor and Uic oUier is Paul Dwycr IHigh Sehool in Oshawa. Lagroix said that the questionnaires, sent to grade 8 students at feeder schools, should be returned sometime t.his weck so that Uiey can bc analyzed and a report prepared for Uic board's consideration later this month. The purpose of Uic survcy, Uic director said, is to sec wheUicr or not parents feel there is thc nccd for anoUicr CaUiolic high school in this part of Uic region. Howcver, Uic con- struction of a new high school facility is not Uic only option being consi- dercd. "W're exploring Uic possibiity of doing somcthing about the present facilities of Denis O'Connor," Lagroix said. He added that these measures may include a restriction on the nuin- ber of students admitted to Uic institution. Lagroix pointed out that if any capital pro- ject was undertaken it would be financed join- tly by thc separate board and Uic private board of Denis O'Con- nor. Under Uic Education Act, Uic separate board is only responsible for students in grades 9 and 10. Students in grades 11, 12 and 13 are consi- dcred to be in a private school, therefore, Uic private board is respon- sible for them. Lagroix also said that before thc board does anything it must receive thc permission of the Ministry of Education to undertake any redevel- opment or new .school construction projeet. 'II think there lsaa need, but the ministry may not agree," he said adding, I"Wc would build only for thc grades 9 and 10. " Lagroix also said that Uic enrolment in Uic separate school system is growing. Latest figures show' that Denis O'Connor's population is 512 stu- dents, who are housed in 12 portables and eight classrooms. 0f these, 280 are students in grades 9 and 10. Ovcrcrowding is also *becoming a problem in Whitby's four separate elementary schools. The total population in Uiese sehools is 1,376 which .was described as being a substantial increase over last year.
