Another local opera- tion reached the appro- ximate one-haîf million mark also which cer- tainly reflects the neee for the Tourist Infor- mation Centre in Whit- Along with the abave attractions - local historical sites were ex- tremely busy and eating establishments have received compliments as the best dining in On- tario from visitars around the world. The tourist centre was located at the corner of Brock and Burns streets and was open every day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Free coffee; free Gater- ade and suckers for the children were a wel- corne treat as the travellers arrived at the tentre for information and direction. A total of 7,852 visitors requested data on at- tractions, camping; ac- commodation; and many other subjects pertaining to tourism. Each of the four students received train- ing flot only from their previaus educational background but from the municipal and library staff. With the co-operation of the Whitby Library Community Informa- tion Centre, they were able to link the people ta the services required. The two centres aller tremendous Co- ordination of services for the public as well as the traveller. The tourist centre compiled data on Whit- by; Durham Region and attractions across the Province of Ontario, early in the season. The large stock ai brochures were contri- butions from the Central Ontario Travel Associa- tion; the Ministry of In- dustry and Tourism; areas around the Region and the Municipal Ad- ministration. Forbes McEwen, assistant administrator ai the Town ai Whitby and co-ordinator ai the tourist centre compli- mented the many com- munity businesses for their donations in helping to make the tourist booth so attrac- tive for visitors. He stated that "1finan- cial support was received from the federal department ai Secretary ai State for the funding af this project and did not reach into the municipal budget". The students also worked on promotional work throughout the summer and produced extensive material for government publica- tions - ta insert the at- tractions and special areas in Whitby for 1982. Needless to say, this program was an ex- citing venture and suc- cessful. Increased visitors ta this area were supported by the Ministry ai Transporta- tion and Communica- tion through their iden- tification af the centre on the 401 Highway. <Whltby's recreational programs were publi- cized through the centre andi excellent comments wçre received from the visitors ta the Whitby Port Marina. Although the centre is closed for the winter at the corner ai Brock and Burns streets, the Whitby Municipal Building will retain the telephone number - 666- 1533 for interested win- ter visitors and provide needed literature ta anyone wanting ta enjoy winter activities. Plans are now ùnder- way for the 1982 opening in May and work will continue throughaut the winter on the co- ordination of this projeet. Whitby Tourist Information Centre is certainly a compliment to the Town and with continued community suppart ... will probably be one ai the best tourist centres outside Metra Toronto!
