PAGE 12, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMIBER 4, 981, WIITBY FREE PRESS Admirable Criehton opens tonight The Anderson Drama Club will be presenting The Admirable Crich- ton, a fantasy-comedy on November 4, 5 and 6 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. Written by J.M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, the play promises to be an enjoy- able and entertaining evening for all ages. The Admirable Crich- ton draws upon elemen- ts familiar to television viewers in such pro- grams as Gilligan's Island and Benson. The setting of the story moves from an English drawing room at the turn of the century to a desert island. The plot centers around what happens to a lord, his spoiled daughters and his servants when they are shipwrecked. Directed by Len Kosurko, the cast has been rehearsing since last year. Originally scheduled for product- ion in the spring of 1981, the play was postponed due to heavy extra curricular commit- ments by cast mem- bers; but both the direc- tor and the cast felt too strongly about The Ad- mirable Crichton and the work they had already put into produc- tioi to cancel it. Rehearsals resumed in September when school re-opened. The drama club is ex- cited about its work and looking forward to suc- cess in the forthcoming production. Tickets for The Ad- mirable Crichton may be purchased from cast members, Anderson students, or at the door on the evening of the performance. Tickets are priced at $3 each for adults, $2 for students, and $1 for children. få ~ THE CORPORATION OF *,,THETOWNOFWHITBY PROCLAMATION Poppy Week TAKE NOTICE that November lst to November 7th, 1981, is hereby proclaimed as "Poppy Week" in and for the Town of Whitby. DATED at Whitby, Ontario, this 4th day of Novem- ber, 1981. R. A. Attersley, Mayor, Town of Whitby. A lesson in life for us all CONT'D FROM PG. 10 taught in Hayden, north of Bowmanville and at Cedar Creek, a place long gone. Newspapers were of great interest and politics were often the topie of the day with many divergent ideas and opinions. Heated discussions and I have heard from others that many enemies were made at election time but soon forgotten when the time was over. Apparently hay and straw were in great demand for Toronto. The reason - so many horses to be fed and bedded down. Miss Brown's father would load up I think in all seasons for the city. Apples and other produce were sold at the St. Lawrence Market, still a great place to shop. The men left in the afternoon and stayed near West Hill by the Rouge Valley at a halfway house and then early in the morning they started out for the city. Miss Brown did not mention highway robbers in this area but I have been told they lurked in the valley and sprung out to rub unwary travellers! A lesson in life for all of us. Our forebearers, strong and staunch, standing on their own two feet or falling by the wayside as some would do. They must have been optimists with hope always in sight because things were not always too easy and little help standing by other than family and friends. Joseph Joubert (1754-1824) said, "Life is a country that the old have seen and lived in. Those who have to travel through it can only learn from them."
