WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1981, PAGE 17 The Church Speaks By THE REV. ARNOLD MAIN Pastor Whitby Pentacostal Church Apparently there is a rather unusual sign hanging over one of IBM's largest computers in California. It consists of four letters G-1-G-0 which stand for message that has ever been communicated by a sign but it does warrant our attention. It is a well known fact by computer experts that it is important to feed proper material into the com- puter if you want good results. If what the pro- grammer puts in is garbage, he will get garbage out. To the layman this really doesn't make much dif- ference, unless you have tangled with one over lost or confused information. Nevertheless as human beings there is a message here which is important. It has been said that the human brain is similar to a computer, and therefore the IBM sign could very easily fit over our heads as well "garbage in, gar- bage out." Now I do not want to be negative, but is it not true that a high percentage of what people introduce into that glob of grey matter above the shoulders is gar- bage? We are actually programming our brains with wrong and even dangerous information. It is time we got down to a serious evaluation of what we listen to, read and watch on TV. After all we would not pour raw sewage into our gas tanks or sit down to a bowl of DDT for lunch. So why should we treat our brains any differently. What we see and hear will effect even dominate our thoughts arnd therefore our actions. Perhaps Paul was thinking of this very problem when he wrote in Philippians chapter 4, "whatever is true, whatever is noble, what ever is right, what- ever is pure, whatever is lonely, whatever is admir- able - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things." There are lots of things that can occupy our lives, our thoughts and our understanding, but nothing is more important then the Word of God. The promises are many for those who chose to read it and apply its teaching to their lives. I believe it has an answer for every question or situation faced by mankind. But most of all it has the answer to life it- self. Within the pages of the Bible we find the account of eternal information, and the focus of this infor- mation is Jesus Christ. He and He alone has the words of life. In Him "we live and move and have our being". Outside of Him we simply have no hope. No free parking downtown this year There will be no free parking in the down- town core this year. The Whitby Down- town Improvement Area Board had requested that there be free parking and remo- val of parking restric- tions from December 14 to 24 with the aim of en- couraging people to shop downtown. However, Whitby Town Council adopted a recommendation that the request be granted provided that the board pay the expected loss of revenue. Assistant administra- tor Forbes McEwen told council that the expect- ed revenue from this period is $1,200. Regional Councillor Tom Edwards opposed the recommendation and suggested that the town pay for the free parking proposai. Public library now providmg community mfo By MARGARET McFAYDEN Chief Librarian If you have been in the main library on Dundas Street, you have probably noticed the Community Informa- tion Desk on the main floor. If you have phoned them recently, you will have heard the staff an- swer - "Whitby Library and Community Infor- mation." These are both clues to a service the library staff have been develop- ing for nearly three years. You have always been able to ask the library a wide range of questions and get answers but now if you have any question or problem which might require information on some service or organi- zation in the town ... give the "Whitby Com- munity Information Ser- vice" at the library a try! They have already helped many people in a great variety of ways. ...Do you need to know where to apply for a small business license? ... Where to get English classes for new Cana- dians? ... Where your nearest co-operative nursery school is? ... What the latest bus schedules are (they have give-away copies too)? ...How to get to various buildings; streets and services in town? ...What places of- fer "pick your own" fruits and vegetables? ...Where to get typing done? ...What activities are available for pre- schoolers? ...What local events are on in town? ...The list of questions they can answer is voluminous and con- stantly growing. If you have any problem or question where you need to know who to speak to for help in the Whitby. or Durham Region, they will be glad to give you assistance in contacting them. Work is also proceed- ing on a Community In- formation Directory. This is a major co- operative project for the libraries in Whitby, Ajax and Pickering and for the Ajax-Pickering Social Planning Council. The project is sponsored by the Jaycees and the directory should be on sale before the end of the year. For more information on the services at the "Whitby Community In- formation Centre or related inquiries - drop by at 405 Dundas Street West - hours Monday to Friday (9 a.m. - 9 p.m.) Saturday (9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.) or call 668- 6531 or 668-6541. "I've done some checking and Ive found that the board has $300 in its funds," he said. "They wouldn't be able to pay the $1,200 and, if we really wanted to help the downtown we should delete that clause from the motion." West Ward Councillor Joe Bugelli spoke against Edwards' suggestion. "I feel ill at ease to subsidize a select group of mer- chants. We seem to forget there are other plazas bordering the central core. "I've gotten questions from malls asking why they're getting left out," he continued. Council passed its motion despite the reservations of senior staff who were of the opinion that free parking in the down- town would cause traffic problems. McEwen said that motorists travelling through the downtown core are accustomed to the normal parking restrictions and the sudden change could lead to accidents. He was also of the opinion that free park- ing would be abused and that would defeat the purpose of bringing shoppers downtown. Michael Burgess, the chairman of the down- town board, said that because of council's conditions, there will be no free parking in the downtown. "They might of well have said no," he said adding that the board does not have the money to pay for the project.
