WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1981, PAGE 1 Anderson, Henry Street, Denis O'Connor HIGH SCHOOL NEWS WE EK Five months left gives cause for celebration at Henry By SHARON CAMERON Henry St. H.S. With only five and a half months of school left, Henry decided to celebrate this with their annual Fun Night. On December 4 such events as the Penny Toss, the Haunted House, For- tune Telling, the new Raw Egg Eating contest and Mr. P. Pitman's gambling casino in the cafetorium took place. The highlights of the evening were bound to be, like every other year, the pie-throwing contest in which our very own teachers were the victims and the Miss Henry contest in which only boys compete. Songs, poetry reading and high voices were some of the things which led to the exciting ap- pointment of Miss Henry High 1981-82. Immunization took place on December 2 for all grade 12 and 13 stu- A CVI action The sports-life at An- derson has been pulsat- ing with school spirit. This spirit took Ander- son's Wrestling Club to a recent victory at an Ajax competition. The team, run by Mr. Gil- man, won 15 of 23 mat- ches. Additional victories were won by Mr. Snidal's senior boys' volleyball team. Their accomplishments in- clude: second place in the Dunbarton Tourna- ment; first place in LOSSA West; second place in LOSSA; and third place in COSSA. Similarly, the girls' basketball season has come to a spirited close. Miss Mannakee, super- vised the enthusiastic midget girls' team to a sixth-place finish. The junior girls, coached by Mr. Neild, narrowly missed entry into LOSSA. The crucial game was lost to Picker- ing High School 30 to 31. The top Anderson scorer for junior and senior divisions respectively were Anne Halsey and Karen Church. Linda Moffatt, the senior girls' coach, was pleased with their fifth place finish. Organizations within the school have been of- fering other athletic diversions for students. The Anderson Student Athletic Association organized the mixed doubles tennis tourna- ment and the Ander- thon. Intramurals at ACVI have been offer- ing noon-hour fun for aill students. The Christmas con- cert will be coming up soon and preparations are being made for it. Already the Concert Band is rehearsing practically every night. Speaking of music, the music department has been busy taking orders for Christmas cakes. Your continued support is appreciated. Tickets for the semi- formal are being sold in the Yearbook Room at lunch every day. The cost is only fifteen dollars for an evening of fun. Only a certain number of tickets will be sold so be sure to reserve your tickets now. Birthday-grams are also quickly becoming a hit at Henry. Run by Linda White, for a dollar, a birthday-gram will be delivered to a friend in homeroom. It can be either anony- mous or you can put your name on it. Party hats will be used and "Happy Birthday To You" will be sung in front of the class. If you want to embarass a friend, here is your big DO'C report By LISA JEPPESON Denis O'Connor H.S. The season of green and red has finally reached DO'C to accompany our school colors, green an-d yellow. These school colors will soon be displayed on DO'C jackets. These jackets are being ordered from National School Services Ltd. and will feature the school crest. It has been many years since school jackets have been offered, and students will receive them sometime in the new year. Another school oriented article is the school ring. These will be ordered on December 10 from Lackie School Rings. They are always a favourite of graduating seniors who wish to have a memento of DO'C. The Christmas Concert is in its final stages of preparation. The solo vocalists have been selected and the sound of Christmas carols has been ema- nating from the music room. There will be no ad- mission charge for the concert, but there will be a silver collection. Keep December 10 free and come to what promises to be a memorable experience. Christmas preparations are also being made for Christmas dinners which are organized by home- rooms. Each class will prepare or order a meal to be enjoyed on December 22 which is the last day of school before Christmas holidays. In sports, the DO!C junior girls' basketball team did well in a game'against Trafalgar Castle. Our team won with a final score of 48 to 20. The up- coming C.O.S.S.A. event has been cancelled for the DO'C team, but they hope to see lots more competi- tion this season. chance. The senior girls basketball team made it to the finals last week- end by defeating East- dale 53 to 43. Paul Dwyer, however, seemed to edge their way to a close win over Henry by a score of 37 to r 33. It was a well-played season and all of the members have a right to be proud. A new team is about to be formed at Henry Street High School - the girls' handball team. For a new and exciting sport to try, here is your chance. Good luck to all of the boys' teams. Mrs. Cathy Carman's grade 13 art of civiliza- tions class and grade 12 sculpture class went to the Art Gallery of On- tario in Toronto on November 27. Works from various artists were observed. Both paintings and sculp- tures were analyzed and praised as the art stu- dents spoke of 'chiar- oscuro' and 'sfumato', two painting techniques used in the High Ren- naissance period (late 1400's to early 1500's).
