Bob was recently named business man of the year by the Whitby Chamber of Commerce for his progressive, optimistic and hard working approach to business. He bas applied these qualities to his elected office setting an example which has created in council a new enthusiasm for the future of Whitby. Bob is, of course, one of the most visible business- men in the community, but 11e is not the only pro- gressive downtown merchant. A quick inventory of the downtown core reveals a variety of specialty stores from clothing, books and gifts to selected foodstuffs. The merchants downtown have been ac- tive in sprucing up their shops inside and out, and you can see examples of beautiful window displays that would put many shopping centre stores to shame. Wben you shop downtown, you will notice the, friendly personal service so often lacking in large chain stores. It is true that you won't find every- thing you need downtown, but you will discover unique stores and personable merchants that can- not be found elsewhere. We must ail follow Bob Attersley's lead in being optimistic about Whitby. If we could ail share bis enthusiasm, Whitby can easilSi attain a sound com- mercial base provid.ing tax dollars and jobs. Under the mayor's promotional programmes, new in- dustry has been located in Whitby recently, and there is a strong indication of more on their way. To continue this trend, we must ail sell Whitby as the ideal community that we know it to be. We don't need complaints about recession, high interest and unemployment, but instead positive action and sup- port for the positive aspects of Whitby. Your mayor and council are striving to set this example, and I arn predicting that 1982 will be a vital year for Wbit- by, with industrial and commercial growth unequalled elsewhere in the region. Merry Christmas to al of you, and a prosperous, Happy New Year. Weekly Horoscope 1 - t-,
