"'Sonie of our people needed work so bad that they joined the con- tractors. " The workers who Iost their jobs did dietary, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance work, Lamoureux said. He believes that the D undas Street East home has about 100 elderly residents. The workers joined CUPE a year ago and have not yet been awar- ded their first contract. "We've tried but the owners have just not shown any interest. It's all in the hands of an ar- bitrator now," Lamour- eux said. The residents, he said, are the ones suffering most in this situation. "At their age they like to have friends, people they know and trust. But the way workers are shuffling in and out of that place makes that needed personal rela- tionship non-existent," he said. "The residents always have to deal with strangers. " Lamoureux, himself employed at a nursing home in Beaverton, claiined the workers were not given an ex- planation for their dis- missals. "I'rn sure the home must be breaking some laws because the work- ers didn't get any holi- day pay, " he added. Wages in the home are difficult to-discuss, he said, because every- one earns a different sti- pend.* The management of Sunnycrest were not available for comment. fusil WIZARD 0F OZ (MUSICAL) Presented bv Whitby Theatre Company Youth Group PERFORMANCES Wed., Dec. 9, 7:30 (Senior) Fr1., Dec. 11, 8:00 Sat.
