PAGE 6, WEDNESDAY. l)LCl~M BER 9. 1981 . WII1TBY FREF PRESS Coinpany bl~imes low sales.... No early rec ail for 100 laid-off Sklar employees ciers WIJV[I Lzzvy Approximately 100 employees of Sklar Manufacturîng Limited will remain off the job at least until the end 0f January. According to a spokes- man for the furniture manufacturer the em- ployees cannot be recalled until sales in- crease and a stock back- log bas been cleared. The 100 workers were laid off last month when Whitby's largest em- ployer reduced produc- tion from 550 to 450 pieces of furniture a day. Bob Donald, the spokesman, said that the furniture business "is not picking up," and that pieces manu- factured earlier this year are ~iiiI on cne showroom floor. He adds that the com- pany hopes that sales can be boosted after the annual furniture show being held in Toronto next month. Because "furniture is fashion-orieflted" Don- ald hopes that dealers will be more confident and increase their or- vîewed the "new fabrics and new designa." The two-week show is expected to draw bet- ween 250 and 300 dealers including major retail- ers such as Eaton's, Leon's and Pascal's. Not only the company is hoping the show will stimulate sales. The president 0f Local International Union, John O'Connor, said that the lay off and temporary shut downs are hard to manage especially with the onset of the Christmas season. Last month, 450 of Sklar's 850 workers were laid off tempor- arily and O'Connor said they "got nothing for He added that the union dues not have a supplementarY benefît plan and there is a two- week waiting period for workers to receive unemploymeflt insuran- ce. O'Connor estimated that the two one-week plant shutdowns cost each worker more than p E Sklar has indicated that another one-week shutdown is possible sometime in the next three weeks. However, O'Connor is confident that the workers can receive un- employment benefits. As far as the 100 workers on Indefinite layoff are concerned, the company is not opti- niistic that they can return to work before late in January.
