Only one faniily film thlis Christmas Despite the facet that many famnilies are so busy over Christmas, they have time to think of littie else, there is stili entertainment for those who may want a change fromn stuffing turlcey and plumn pudding into their stomachs. It is unfortunate this year, that only one film for children bas corne on the scene, and of course, that one is froni the WaIt Disney studios. We should mention here that Cinema Whit- by will be showing a matinee film for children on both Satur- days and Sundays. They always have a good film just for the children. Warren Beatty stars in Reds at Cinema 1 in the Oshawa Centre. Buddy Buddy is held over at Cinema 2. This one features those old buddy boys Walter Mat- thau and Jack Lemmon. Another hold-over is at Cinerna 3 in Oshawa Centre. 'This one, ROI!- over, stars Jane Fonda and Kris Kristofferson. Burt Reynolds has the starring role in Sharky's Machine at the Regent. It doesn't take much of a mind to guess who Sharky is. Over the street at the Marks in Oshawa, Chevy Chase cavorts in Modemn Problems., Many families have a lot of fun over the holi- days by getting out for a day as a group, at one of the local conservation parks. It helps if there is snow, but hikes through the woods can be enjoyed at this time of year as well as in summer. Another suggestion if you are looking for something to do and want to get out of the house for a while, is to take a tour at night, through your own neigh- bourhood and view al the outdoor decorations. Some of thein are very good and worth the time it takes. Christmas 1981 is upon us and, as usual, it seems to have crept up without fair warning. We've al been busy with shopping and end-of-the-year activi- ties and it will be good to spend sorne quiet time wit.h our families. I'm particularly looking forward to spending some more time in the riding after the last few hec- tic months in Ottawa. I know that this is not going to be the most financ- ially secure of Christmases for many of my consti- tuents. I wish there was more i could do on your behaif in the House of Commons, but the govern- ment has not been making the economy its numnber one priority. We in the opposition are permitted to respond to government policy but are rarely able to reorder the government's agenda. I feel especialiy badly for young families suffer- ing under high mortgage rates. That problem, together with inflation and new taxes, can under- standingly foster a bitter and angry outlook. It's not n'uch but ail I can say is: Hang in there.. Our economy can't be neglected much longer and I think the government is beginning to recognize this. The fact that portions of the new budget were revoked is a hopeful sign. Maybe there'll be some open-mindedness in Ottawa in the new year. In any'event, Christmas, unlike economic condi- tions, can be counted on. I hope that ahl my consti- tuents, regardless of their financiai circumstapces, will be able to tap the true spirit of Christmas and retain it during the next year. Cecil and I wish a happy holiday season to ail and good luck for 1982.
