By THE WORSHIPFUL ROBERT A. ATTERSLEY Mayor of the Town of Whitby The Christmas Season is a time for festivities; family reunions; memories and above all, appre- ciation of how fortunate we are to live in a country of freedom. The freedom to place your roots in the community of your choice where you are able to exercise responsibility and share in the growth and development of your future. To the citizens of Whit- by, I sincerely thank you for choosing Whitby as your home and for the opportunity of serving as your mayor. I would like to utilize my last column of 1981 to bring you up to date on the activities of my first term in office. Progressive development during this past year, added a new dimension to the industry of Whitby. We have experienced an increase in industrial growth with several new industries on stream and the construction of commercial buildings is reach- ing a level equal to the competitive market of any municipality in Ontario. Quality residential dwell- ings has surpassed our anticipated goal with a noticeable influx in the population of our com- munity. The recreational aspect of Whitby Harbor increased to capacity with 200 slips rented and thousands of pleasure crafts visiting this area. Needless to say, the recognition of Whitby as a place to live - work and play has certainly proven this concept is fact. The Mayor's Task Force on the Dis- abled has submitted 110 recommendations to coun- cil for ramping a barrier-free community in the Town of Whitby. The avenue of tourism has supported an increase of 197.6 per cent in visitors to this area over 1980. I am positive, this is reflective of the warm hospitali- ty and excellent service offered by the tourist opera- tions in Whitby. We have a blend of historical; cultural; and recreational facilities and programs which promises to be the finest in Ontario as well as the most beautiful garden centre in all of Canada. Activities in the tourism field involved the promo- tion of Whitby for one week at the Ministry of In- dustry and Tourism location at the Eaton's Centre in Toronto; the operation of our own tourist centre from May to Thanksgiving weekend and many sup- portive programs with the CHOO Chili Cook-off; Rodeo Week; Whitby Awareness Day and other related projects. Through the above, we have generated interest in Whitby to such a degree, we are now receiving letters of congratulations from across Canada and abroad, on being the "achievers" of Ontario and many other fine compli- ments. You, as citizens of Whitby have made this possible through your fine contributions and dedica- tion to your "town." As the doors of 1981 are closing, we must be pre- pared to open even wider doors for 1982. Success is dependent on continuous activities; services and development. We have this foresight in Whitby ,and I am positive we will have the most successful community in Ontario in 1982. To everyone, I extend my warmest greetings for the Christmas Season and may Santa fill your stock- ing with prosperity; love and friendship and may you have a Happy New Year.
