IChristmas Seals feil short of goal by -$7K Durhamn Region Lung J, Ass ociation's. annual Christrnas Seal Carn- paign closed- officially on February 7, with a final total -of $96,500.31. Ji Although achieving an alI-time high, the local carnpaign did'not.reach its $100,000 target (a 13 per cent, increase over total . funds raised during the-1980/81 carn- paign). However, campaign chairman Walter Beath ' i is pleased with the result. "We feelthis has been a haighly successful camp)aign," he said, "ta king into account jlocal layoffs and busi- ness closures". The association is now looking at ways to main- tain its fulli.prograrn schedule, despîte the 3.5 per cent carnpaign shortfall. It is hoped to avoid service cuts by /requesting smail dona- tions or registration fees during year-round pro- gramn activities. The lung association has, been active in Dur- hamn Region for aimost 30 years, serving the lung disease patient directly through com- rnunity support pro-ý grarns, and indirectly through research pro- jects. Health education pro- grarnming in local schools, and lung func- tion. testing to detect early signs of lung dis- ease are aiso provided by the association, through funds raised by Christmas Seals. Carnpaign donations are stili being accepted, and should be sent c/o the Bank of Nova Scotia, Il Sirncoe Street South, Oshawa. Between You and Me By RUTH COLES lmJ Odds and ends this week written on such a beauti- fui rnorning, pure white snow everywhere, even on the trees and it is holding, we hope for a few days.. Some roads are in pretty bad shape but the overail picture is not ail bad. Snow is great for the childrený and it makes it easy and enjoyable for them to enjoy the outdoors. Our gardens need the snow, a warmn ground cover to proteet against freezing rain and too low tern- peratures. For some reason we have two ferns which neyer die off béfore winter cornes. They stay green whatever the weather. Thankfully, now they are covered with snow. We love to watch the rabbits tearing and tear they do back and forth across the lawn. Maybe they have a garne they play between thernselves. They sit a few feet from the windows eating bird seed fro m the feeders night and day even while our tiny dog Sam looks on. It seems to me that there are fewer birds this win- ter; certainly where we live and fewer varieties. We have Great Horned Owls who nest high in the pines. Neighbours have seen thern occasionally lately as they roost on a pole. This is a sign of spring just, around the corner. Where are the Canada Geese going these days? We have seen flocks of thern flying in formation always due north. We watch "The Muppets Show" every evening at 5:30 p.rn. on C.B.C. as we sip a drink before dinner'. I think without a doubt it is the most creative, clever television show on the air. The animais, worms and almost every conceivabie living thing in the animal worid are wonderful. Their dress is clever, their.ac- tions remarkable. Miss Piggy, as she tosses her head, Kermit when he iaughs hold us enthralled,, no doubt the child part of us. Everyone concerned rnust be a clever artist. Lots of fun and laughter before the doomn and gloomn cornes. Do you ail get these "selling" or "igive away", phone calîs every day? An invasion of privacy, we think, and -I arn really tired of thern. Often three or four a day and when you lift the receiver a cheery voice greets'you, "Good rnorning, Mrs. Coles, this is, i A handy now book by Sidney Led- son, author of the best-selling book, 'Teach Vour Child to Readin 60 Days'. Here's a book no stenographer should be without; virtually a unlverslty course in grammer - but presented in a iveIy way no university canmatch. $3 ar PRINTING & OFFICE SUPPLV 218 Harwaod Ave. S., Ajax 638-1968 WHITBYý FREE PRESS, Rosey" or "Katie", or whatever. Irnmediately, rny reply le "'rn sorry but I'rn not interested-." Generally a stimned silencebecause they have not- been able to tell their story. I' realize they must make a living and no doubt there are dozens of thern sitting in a room with phones in front of thern. In our case it is double trouble because we have rny oid narne and my husband's narne both in the book for the tirne being. A few minutes after the first call the voice again,,always cheerful starts, "Hello etc." When they recognize my voice there is a silence and they carry on. When they hear rny response there is an incredulous, almost inaudible gasp. No doubt, they think they have mnade a raistake and cailed the same number twice. So far while writing this, there have been three cails and, of course, I'rn waiting for the fourth!1 Wili sorneone tell me why appie juice has sudden- ly shot Up in price? A frost in the south, so, 0f cour- se, those prices do go Up but why apple juice? Is our crop not an auturnn one s0 have the costs suddenly taken an upward ieap which means we pay rnoreý Apples are part of our environment, the trees grow on our land, in our brown earth which no doubt nature in ail her wisdom provides for us tô be cared for and nurtured. Doesn't- it stand to reason that apples rnay be better for us than tropical fruits and vegetables? I read once that during the depression when citrus fruit growers were having a bad time an M.D. carne Up with the idea that everyone, especially babies and children mnust have orange juice. Word âpread across the world wîth great speed and frorn then un- tii now millions and millions of gallons of juice have been consumed. None of us ever denied our infants t1his panacea. I guess'ail pediatricians ail over the worid became *addicted to this idea. We take an imported orange and a dornestic ap- ple, compare the nutrients and what provides what? Which has the rnost nutrive value? Compare a citrus fruit, especialiy,-oranges, with one right off the tree, the colour generally very paie and the irnported ones a beautiful shade of bright orange, very appeaiing to the eye. Many of us have eaten salads every day of the year ail through the years but many people in other lands have not. During the winter these foods have always been an expansive cornrodity for rnany and now the soaring prices are out of sight. Imagine a farniiy 0f four or five children ahl eating salads often on a daily basis. Healthy strong peoples from rnany nations eat root vegetables in the off season. It's what you put o~n thern or mix with them that causes the calories to go up. They do have potassium, a very necessary part of everyone's diet. Bananas also provide potassium so look after your heart and think twice about giving up potatoes. There go the rabbits through the snow and the' birds are after the suet we have hung frorn the trees.
